[Bug 409100] New: Necessary apps buried too deeply under kmenu
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=409100 Summary: Necessary apps buried too deeply under kmenu Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: coomac@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- This isn't a bug so much as a newbie-friendly issue. I seriously salute the opensuse team on making compiz so easy to enable on 11.0. The desktop effects app is a joy to use, but newcomers have no clue that opensuse even contains this tool. Likewise, the new zypper has quickly become a celebrity, but only amongst those in the know. Opensuse 11.0 contains a lot of stuff that make life easy, but there's no point to including those tools if only hardcore users can find them. I'm sure anyone that hangs out in the irc channel or the forums will have come across these questions at least a few times: 1. How do I install <randomsoftware>? 1a. I just downloaded <randomname>.tar.gz. WTF am I supposed to do to install? 2. How do I get cool 3D effects? 3. How do I set up my printer (or something else that can be done quickly with yast)? 4. How do I play my windows games?!! 5. How do I get my music to play?!!!! All the above are easy as cake for those already familiar with opensuse. Not so easy when this is the first time someone has seen a linux desktop. A tiny bit of icon addition is all that's required to fix 1-4. Placing another Install Software icon on the desktop will greatly decrease 1 and 1a. 2-4 can also be resolved by the same method. However, since newcomers will be clueless as to what yast stands for, plopping an icon that just says Yast on the desktop won't help them any more than having a Yast menu entry. A screentip or an entry that says Configure System should be more than enough though. Same thing with wine. I was more than a little disappointed the first time I tried playing a song after a spanking new 11.0 livecd install. In 10.3, a menu popped up with a short summary of why the necessary codecs were not available and offered to install them. A few clicks was all that was required to get my songs playing. In 11.0, a dialog appears ONCE with a link to the most obscure site ever created, containing no decipherable info on what needed to be done. A PhD in linux should not be required to get proprietary apps installed. Why that site, rather than any of the dozens of How To pages out there boggles my mind. A link to slashdot would have been so much more useful than the linked site. While a codec install wizard would be awesome, linking to a user friendly site should be enough to get > 90% of new users up and running. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hm, Martin, seems that I had no resources too. I will close this "bug" now with "invalid". FATE is the correct place for such things. Michl, perhaps you can extract some ideas out of Nkoli's feature requests for FATE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
