[Bug 770993] New: Brightness adjusting not working on laptop in 12.2b2
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=770993 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=770993#c0 Summary: Brightness adjusting not working on laptop in 12.2b2 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vmicho@gmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1 After starting the initial installer or starting the newly installed system, the system turns the brightness to minimum. It is impossible to adjust the brightness (with the brightness up/down buttons) after full boot to system or installer. Note that the brightness adjustment worked very well in 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4 (I gave up 12.1 because of broken intel wifi drivers) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Run installer or installed system 2. "Enjoy" I'll add some more info soon about my system (sorry, I'm in xp now) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I fixed the problem partially with kernel options: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor (I'll try also the legacy option) This causes at least that the backlight is unchanged during boot and not brought to minimum brightness and stay that way (it really hut your eyes on min brightness) But /sys/class/backlight is still empty. I'll try with 12.2 RC 1, as it is now out (cool) Also I'll compare with my 11.3 installation, where it worked (notably look at what's inside /sys/class/backlight and what kernel module was there). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The module responsible for backlight manipulation is 'video' (kernel/drivers/acpi/video.ko). - rmmod video: will empty the contents of /sys/class/backlight and the brightness buttons will do nothing - modprobe video: will fill some entries in /sys/class/backlight and the brightness buttons do OK. It doesn't depend on nvidia driver. The backlight manipulation works in console (e.g. runlevel 3). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unloading or loading it does absolutely nothing (/sys/class/backlight is always empty). I've only found in dmesg: [ 8.670586] video: probe of LNXVIDEO:00 failed with error -5 When un/loading the video module, there is further no such message. It is only in dmesg's history. * The 'acpi_osi=Linux' kernel option seems to have no effect * The 'acpi_backlight=vendor' leaves the brightness at bootloader level and cannot change the brightness further in booted system * The 'acpi_backlight=legacy' restores the default 12.2b2 behaviour: it dims backlight to minimum during boot and leaves it at that level. Cannot change it further. Need to poweroff and increase the brightness when in bootloader. Plain reboot doesn't help - brightness is not adjustable even in bootloader. Note: I tried this all after upgrading to 3.4.4-2-desktop SMP PREEMPT x86_64 In 11.3, /var/log/messages I have only (after wakeup): [ 1529.359389] video LNXVIDEO:00: Restoring backlight state Looks like some problem in acpi/video for me. At least the dimming did work, once at boot. I'll now try RC1, but I doubt anything changes there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In fact nothing changed. I had to add 'acpi_backlight=vendor' to kernel cmdline so I don't get the minimum brightness. Now running with nouveau driver for vga card.
