This still leaves us with vmhgfs not building with Kernel 3.10 / 3.11, which we have included in openSUSE Factory. The last open-vm-tools release was in April; any plans for an update there? Or at least a fix / patch for recent kernels? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Or at least a fix / patch for recent kernels?
I just found this patch on Debian support mailing list: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=39;filename=0004-vmblock-vm... I didn't check it by myself yet, but I'll be glad to test the resulting package if you decide to accept it. At a first glance the patch seems to be very simple: excluding the snippets which fix vmblock-related source files (useless because vmblock driver was superseeded by vmblock-fuse), the single fix relevant to vmhgfs seems to be the one which adds a missing #include statement at the beginng of "modules/linux/vmhgfs/file.c". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Not sufficient... we have kernel 3.11... and we really require VMWare to support this module.. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As a consequence, the package also does not contain the vmhgfs mount helper tools. This, in fact, means that there are NO kernel modules left; so there won't be a KMP package in 13.1. open-vm-tools still contains the vmtoolsd helper, integrating the tools into the GUI, so there is apparently still some need for the package. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unles VMWare starts on maintaining the code base again, there is likely not much future in them (most of the kernel modules are in the upstream kernel by now, so there is not much left to be done anyway). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

They are still maintaining the source code base, as you can see for instance installing the 30-day evaluation version of the latest Workstation 10 (the updated source code package is there and still provided under GPL license according to the headers), they just stopped releasing it on their SourceForge website, so far. Anyway, even after moving all drivers upstream into the kernel, the open-vm-tools package will stll be required, since it provides many important user space daemons and tools. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Indeed, but userspace is much less shortliving and thus easier to maintain. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
