[Bug 262325] New: powernow: This module only works with AMD K7 CPUs
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262325 Summary: powernow: This module only works with AMD K7 CPUs Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 2plus Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Not sure what this could do, anyway I think this module should not be included in the i586 kernel, or am I mistaken ? I don't seem to run into problems, only the message appears in dmesg, see attachment. This is openSuSE 10.3 alpha3 (according to tty1), uname -r says 2.6.21-rc5-git6-2-default, Hardware is FSC Amilo Si1520, Intel dual core, model name : Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The message is printed so that when a user loads the module, they know why the module is immediately unloaded. I am wondering why a module that works exclusively for K7 cpus should not be tied in with this option. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The kernel without the K7 option enabled will still work fine on a K7 system. Danny - I'm bouncing this one to you to decide on since it's not a kernel bug. Haldaemon is looping over the available cpufreq modules until it finds one that works. The modules aren't staying in memory so there's no penalty long term, but it's pointless to try to load all of them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Since there is no way to know which kernel module really work on a machine and since there is no automatic way to load the cpufreq modules I close this as WONTFIX. You can remove the not needed modules from CPUFREQ_MODULES in /etc/init.d/haldaemon if you don't want to see the warning. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
