[Bug 721815] New: 64-bit openSUSE-12.1 beta1 DVD installation fails if non-default boot settings selected
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=721815 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=721815#c0 Summary: 64-bit openSUSE-12.1 beta1 DVD installation fails if non-default boot settings selected Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lee_matheson@hotmail.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0 64-bit openSUSE-12.1 beta1 (from DVD) install failed immediately after software installation but prior to first reboot (and hence prior to final configuration). Obtained ansi pix "an error occurred during the installation". Rebooting at this point resulted in a grub error "Error 13 ; Invalid or unsupported executable format, press any Key to continue" Also, kernel-desktop changed to kernel-default during software selection but I believe that not relevant. Post#37 from openSUSE forums has screen pix: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-release-beta/... I note PC has this partitioning prior to 12.1 install: - /dev/sda1 = Windows - /dev/sda2 = / (openSUSE-11.4) - /dev/sda3 = / (openSUSE-12.1 M5) - /dev/sda4 = extended - /dev/sda5 = swap - /dev/sda6 = /home (openSUSE-12.1 M5) - /dev/sda7 = /home (openSUSE-11.4.) sda2 was the active partition. When installing openSUSE-12.1 beta1 on /sda3 ( / ) and /sda6 (/home) I selected in the openSUSE installer to 'boot from root' but deselected 'set active flag in Partition table for boot partition' and deselected 'Write genric boot code to MBR'. After the failed install, I tried again, but this time I kept 'set active flag in Partition table for boot partition' selected and kept 'Write genric boot code to MBR' selected. That changed active partition to /dev/sda3 and the install succeeded although with another problem after the software install documented in post#44 http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-release-beta/... .. This 2nd time (with default boot selections) a hardware reboot succeeded to allow the install to continue Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. During 64-bit DVD install (KDE selected), change the boot parameters to non default values 2. After software install, installation will fail 3. Actual Results: Install failed as noted in post#37 here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-release-beta/... Expected Results: Installation should have continued smoothly, and /dev/sda3 should have been able to boot from root without being forced to write to MBR and without being forced to set active flag in Partition Table. Note 12.1 M5 worked fine on this PC. The installation failed. I assume its valid (when openSUSE-11.4 already has generic MBR setup with /dev/sda2 being active) to have /dev/sda3 set to boot from root. If that is an inappropriate boot setting in the installer, I think the install should NOT have failed at this point but should have continued. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=721815 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=721815#c2 --- Comment #2 from Lee Matheson <lee_matheson@hotmail.com> 2011-10-04 19:32:15 UTC --- https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678923 was written on openSUSE-11.4. I note this PC has two different 64-bit openSUSE-11.4 DVD installs (in different partitions) with no such problem ... so I would be surprised if it is the same. I think this is systemd script related. I note the install ONLY worked after I stopped trying to customize the configuration of the boot (ie boot code location, agreed to write custom code to MBR ... etc ... ). I think there is a bug in that script where it is not compatible with systemd. But that's wild speculation, possibly driven by systemd paranoia on my part. This is reproducible, but my time is very limited to test (due to a LOT happening at the place where my paid salary comes from - allowing only minimal time for my GNU/Linux hobby). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
