[Bug 566125] New: No difference between Grayscale and RGB subpixel antialiasing
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=566125 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=566125#c0 Summary: No difference between Grayscale and RGB subpixel antialiasing Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: federico@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Development Blocker: --- The "Fonts" tab of gnome-appearance-properties lets one select between grayscale antialiasing for fonts (for CRTs) or RGB subpixel antialiasing (for LCDs). However, something is broken in openSUSE 11.2 so that both options produce exactly the same results: I get no RGB subpixel antialiasing, only grayscale. See the attached screenshots for reference. This could be a new incarnation of bug #104365 - see that one for extensive discussion of how an overzealous configuration for fontconfig can cause apps to be unable to select their antialiasing parameters. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I select subpixel rendering, I get greyscale rendering (easily verified by zooming in on the text and noticing that there are no orange/red and blue edge pixels on the text, only grey pixels, or by comparing it to the result of choosing greyscale rendering). Rather strange, given that the ‘Product highlight’ page says that ‘The Freetype in openSUSE 11.4 supports sub-pixel rendering, bringing much crisper fonts to LCD screens’. For the record, I use a clean install of openSUSE 11.4, and have all the latest updates. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I enable subpixel rendering in KDE, I still only get greyscale rendering. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

AFAIK, there was a legal issue with subpixel *hinting*, but this is just subpixel anti aliasing. Was there a legal issue with subpixel rendering as well? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in openSUSE since the time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a current, supported openSUSE version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly reopen this bug and move it to the tested version of openSUSE. Truly yours. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I could re-check 13.1 (which is now final), but I haven't seen any relevant updates on the update channel anyway. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'd not seen the comment that you stated it's still there in 13.1... If so: reopen and change the product to openSUSE 13.1 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
