[Bug 299145] New: (k)NetworkManager fails to set ESSID
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=299145 Summary: (k)NetworkManager fails to set ESSID Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 1 Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hartmut.meyer@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other I'm trying to connect to an unencrypted network with hidden ESSID. In knetworkmanager I use the option "connect to other wireless network" (like I would do with 10.2). I enter the correct ESSID and monitor the progress with iwconfig on the command line. First it becomes apparent that networkmanager for some reason does not set the ESSID - it just stays blank. In a further attempt I set the ESSID manually before attempting to connect with knetworkmanager: iwconfig eth1 essid johann-eilers-weg_24 knetworkmanager -> connect to other wireless network (specifying the ESSID) after manually setting the ESSID I can see with "iwconfig" that the ESSID is correctly set. After starting to connect with knetworkmanager I see with "iwconfig" that the ESSID is blank again. So apparently networkmanager does change the ESSID, but always to an empty/blank state. Wireless connection to the same network works fine when completely done manually: iwconfig eth1 essid johann-eilers-weg_24 ifup-dhcp eth1 Hardware is an built-in mini-PCI card (orinoco_pci). I will attach hwinfo --wlan /var/log/NetworkManager -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=299145#c4 --- Comment #4 from Hartmut Meyer <hartmut.meyer@novell.com> 2007-08-10 05:17:55 MST --- ok - have installed NetworkManager-gnome. But am not sure how to use it. I stopped knetworkmanager and then tried to load nm-applet. Successfully I believe - only it does not show up in the KDE panel. In fact, I can see the panel makes space for a new icon, but this space doesn't get filled. If I start nm-applet once more, more space is filled in the KDE panel but again this space does not get filled. Right or left click in this empty space doesn't do anything either. Is that to be expected? I never had 10.2 installed on this particular hardware (a Thinkpad R32) but have 10.2 running on my work laptop (Thinkpad T41p) - using the same network with knetworkmanager. No problems whatsoever. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You surely don't want to install GNOME in general (and try with GNOME desktop loaded)? If you have another wireless card please try the connection with it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=299145#c7 --- Comment #7 from Hartmut Meyer <hartmut.meyer@novell.com> 2007-08-10 08:00:47 MST --- have not yet installed gnome but instead done a fresh install with the KDE CD. did so because I wanted to make sure it's not related to this being an update of an update of an update ... Behaviour is basically still the same but found some new variation of it: 1. knetworkmanager -> "connect to other wireless network" (give proper ESSID) 2. see knetworkamanager stalling at 28% (as before) 3. confirm with "iwconfig" that ESSID is not set / blank 4. now manually set right ESSID (iwconfig wlan0 essid johann-eilers-weg_24) 5. see knetworkmanager complete the connection 6. check with "iwconfig" ... .. and be surpised that the ESSID now is "johann-eilers-weg_24z" (note the additional 'z' at the end of the ESSID) - but connection works. knetworkamanger shows the correct ESSID (without the additional 'z' that is reported by "iwconfig"). This is reproducable. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Same behaviour as described in comment #7: 1. nm-applet -> "connect to other wireless network" (give proper ESSID) 2. see nm-applet trying to connect but being stuck 3. confirm with "iwconfig" that ESSID is not set / blank 4. now manually set right ESSID (iwconfig wlan0 essid johann-eilers-weg_24) 5. see nm-applet complete the connection Unlike described in comment #7 "iwconfig" now does show the correct ESSID (no additional trailing letter). But other than that no difference between nm-applet and knetworkmanager. Both fail to set the ESSID correctly and need manual help with iwconfig. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=299145#c10 --- Comment #10 from Hartmut Meyer <hartmut.meyer@novell.com> 2007-08-15 03:19:40 MST --- Yesterday I saw - to my surprise - that nm-applet did succeed in connecting to this hidden/unencrypted wireless network. Same "side effect" as described in comment #7, though: --- snip ----- 5. see knetworkmanager complete the connection 6. check with "iwconfig" ... .. and be surpised that the ESSID now is "johann-eilers-weg_24z" (note the additional 'z' at the end of the ESSID) - but connection works. knetworkamanger shows the correct ESSID (without the additional 'z' that is reported by "iwconfig"). --- snap ----- However, after a reboot, nm-applet failed just as before. I then tried with the KDE install (have two parallel installations of 10.3 beta1: one with the KDE CD and one with the Gnome CD) and there, too I could see knetworkmanager successfully connect to this network. But like nm-applet it isn't stable: after "rcnetwork restart" or reboot chances are high that it will not connect. When it connects iwconfig again shows the additional 'z' at the end of the ESSID). I'm wondering if this might be related to the observation that another user made here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242137#c8 --- snip ----- 2. I discovered more details about the wrong behavior of KNetworkManager: If KNetworkManager rejects the key once, then it keeps rejecting. The user gets a new chance by terminating and restarting KNetworkManager. The “keeps rejecting until restart” gives the user the impression that he has no chance at all. This is not right. After a restart there is a good chance (at least higher than 50 percent) to succeed. --- snap ----- Note that that report was about access to encrypted networks on 10.2 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
