[Bug 208144] New: Standard install defaults to netapplet instead of NetworkManager
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=208144 Summary: Standard install defaults to netapplet instead of NetworkManager Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mboman@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com When doing a default install with the GNOME pattern, in VMware, the install defaults to netapplet instead of NetworkManager. Surely we want NM to be the default? Not sure if this is only happening in VMware or on real machines as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Only the laptop pattern on 10.2 installs NM by default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The default should be as it was in 10.1: * Default on Laptops is NetworkManager * Default on other systems is traditional method * The user can easily switch between them. Therefore: On a GNOME VMware system, traditional method should be choosen and not NetworkManager. Note: SLED always uses NM, SLES always uses the traditional method. Based on this: What is the problem you have? I do not completely understand the report. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This one can probably be closed then. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=208144 ------- Comment #5 from mboman@novell.com 2006-09-26 14:23 MST ------- OTOH, wouldn't it be better to always use NM? The last thing I noticed is that if I set a static IP address, NM will accept that and not try to get an address via DHCP. I'm just thinking about Wireless and VPN support in NM which is quite good and I think it might be useful even for Desktop (ie non laptop) machines. That way we wouldn't have to maintain netapplet for future products. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Once everything works, we should switch. This is tracked in our ways, so I'm marking this bugs as INVALID. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
