First, I cannot reproduce neither with incremental updates of fontconfig (I am following factory) nor with direct 2.9.0 -> 2.10.2 update. Second: Background: fontconfig available_configuration configuration(symlinks) -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.9.x /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ /etc/fonts/conf.d/ 2.10.x /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/ /etc/fonts/conf.d/ (/etc/fonts/conf.avail/ dir is kept even in 2.10 fontconfig package for backward compatibility.) So the symlink should indeed change target after update to >= 2.10.0. What you see (i. e. created 69-unifont.conf.rpmnew) should imho happen only when, before you update to >= 2.10.0, you would redirect symlink to something else than ../conf.avail/69-unifont.conf. But it evidently still points to this target so I can't imagine right now where the problem is. The readlink manpage states that readlink does not append a null bytes.
