[Bug 712023] New: System disconnects from display during boot after upgrade to kernel 2.6.34.10
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=712023 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=712023#c0 Summary: System disconnects from display during boot after upgrade to kernel 2.6.34.10 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alexander.koenig@koenig-a.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=445615) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=445615) Hardware info User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.2.18) Gecko/20110613 SUSE/3.6.18-0.2.1 Firefox/3.6.18 Hardware: Mainboard ASRock K7S41GX CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Graphics card: Excalibur Radeon 9200 (ATI) After upgrade to the latest kernel provided by SUSE online update (2.6.34.10) the system does not boot into a usable mode any more. A fraction of a second after starting the boot process the screen turns black and will not display anything any more (the monitor reports "no signal"). Booting with nosplash or splash=0 results in a handful lines on the screen, which however disappear so quickly that I cannot read the content. I believe that I read something like "conflict with preserved memory" on one of the last lines. However the computer boots into a running system to which I can login remotely. I attach "/var/boot.msg", "/var/messages" and "/var/warn" created on this system. The system boots perfectly into the graphics environment with the vanilla kernel 2.6.34.10, so it is clear that the problem is due to the SUSE patches to the kernel. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: To reproduce: boot with SUSE kernel 2.6.34.10, default or desktop flavour Actual Results: A fraction of a second after starting the boot process the screen turns black (no signal). Expected Results: It should boot into a running system with working display. Upgrade to SUSE kernel 2.6.34.10 on another computer with the same mainboard but using the onboard display of the MB instead of an AGP card worked without any resulting problems. Short of a better idea, I am currently bisecting the stack of patches to find out which one introduces the bug. It will take a long time, as the only machine on which I can reproduce the problem is not fast (old Pentium 4 at 2.8 GHz). So reverting to 0 avoids hitting the bug at a critical time, but for now the bug is still present. That being said, I would expect i2c_algo_bit.bit_test=0 to revert to exactly the behavior of the previous kernel (2.6.34.8-0.2) from a user perspective. If you really see something different, I am probably missing one piece of the puzzle. Michele, I suspect that your problem was different from the one everybody else reported (including the other users who reported "same here" in your own bug.)
