[Bug 551613] New: Segfault attempting 11.1 -> 11.2 upgrade via yast wagon
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551613 Summary: Segfault attempting 11.1 -> 11.2 upgrade via yast wagon Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Greg.Freemyer@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=324966) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=324966) save_y2logs ran shortly after the segfault User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-3.1 Firefox/3.5.3 I was testing the 11.1 to 11.2 upgrade process via "yast2 wagon". I installed the latest 11.1 version of wagon via yast. Then from the command line I ran yast2 wagon. I got the ncurses version. I stepped through several dialog boxes and then metadata started being updated. (It seemed to me it was 11.1 repos it was checking which surprised me.) Then it segfaulted. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Expected Results: An upgraded 11.2 RC2 system. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Daniel Schmidt <jdsn@novell.com> 2009-11-03 10:52:32 MST --- Lukas, how is wagon supposed to work? These logs indicate that the registration code of openSUSE 11.1 was called but as I understand the system was updated right before. How does this fit? The segfault btw. happens when the registration the first time calls a function of a Perl module. So I assume that there are version or library conflicts. And the most interesting question is: why is the registration started during this wagon upgrade in the first place? It was removed from the installation workflow long ago. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've now run wagon about 3 times. In each case I left the 11.1 repos in place and did NOT add any 11.2 repos. Thus all that I assume should have happened was the latest packages from my various repos should have been updated. The first time I tried with the ncurses interface and it segfaulted as shown in this bugzilla. I rebooted and was able to rerun "yast2 wagon". the 2nd and 3rd time I ran it from the QT interface and it ran to completion. The second time it updated all my packages as expected. The third time it found only a couple packages and updated them. In all three efforts I was presented with the registration dialog box. I attempted each time to register now, but the process never worked. So if the segfault was caused by the registration process and it is no longer an appropriate part of the workflow it would be great to get it gone. fyi: I have been trying to document the wagon upgrade to 11.2 from 11.1 process. See <http://en.opensuse.org/Wagon>. Per the very basic wagon instructions I found as the skeleton to build that page, wagon from the 11.1 repo is used to perform the upgrade. That seems wrong to me and that wagon and zypper should both be pulled from the 11.2 repo prior to running wagon. If someone would confirm that, I'll fix the Wagon wiki entry. Thanks -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

See <http://en.opensuse.org/Wagon>. I wrote 90% of what is there, but I am doing it from trial and error. At this point I have run wagon several times, both ncurses and QT. I only had the one segfault. And in the above instructions I have it saying to skip the registration step. If you could review the above page and verify the steps are what you had envisioned that would be great. One step in particular I believe is missing is upgrading wagon and zypper to the 11.2 versions prior to running wagon. When I did that for my main deskop machine, I pulled in about 10% of the full 11.2 distro, so I'm hoping there is a supported way to either skip that preliminary upgrade or to pull in just a few specific packages and not see a cascade of dependencies that causes 100+ packages to be updated. What was different when you got the segfault? Did you try different setups or ways using wagon? I try to understand what happened but I can not see why a call to a perl module creates a segfault. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This would be the best for openSUSE, sure. But we need the registration for our enterprise customers. Thats why I asked about some details, because I have never heared about problems there yet. And the ncurses based browser is w3m and is definately not the problem, as the registration in your case didn't even made it that far :( Ok, so if there are no more details I tend to close this as WORKSFORME, but as you provided logs with a segfault I don't dare to do it :) Thus, lowering priority. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Daniel Schmidt <jdsn@novell.com> 2010-02-02 17:11:55 UTC --- The bug appeared in a wagon-migration test from SLES11-GA to SLES11-SP1. It is because a update for yast2-registration was not published, which should have been published, see SWAMP notice in original bug #516330. We need to check if yast2-registration 2.17.25 was released as update for SLE11. If not we should publish the current and last version of yast2-registration for SLE11 "2.17.28" as update (all later changes are related to the new WebYaST API). In order to function properly yast2-wagon should to require "yast2-registration
2.17.24" or ">= 2.17.25".
Something similar applies to openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 (just the version numbers may differ - I will check that). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Lukas, IMHO yast2-wagon should definitely require yast2-registration >= 2.17.25 for the move from SLE11 to SLE11-SP1. Could you please add that to make sure that it does not crash - thanks. Btw. In openSUSE 11.2 this fix is already included, so a move to 11.3 via wagon should work. Only for openSUSE 11.1 this fix was not published, so the move to 11.2 via wagon results in a crash.
