The desktop is there, but it doesn't react on the mouse (no mouseovers, etc.). It also seems that clicking works for unfreezing the desktop as well. It might also be related to bug 734749 - since I have working sound (even without any soundcard available), I haven't seen this effect anymore... Does this make sense? Might the startup sound delay the display of the panel?
