[Bug 849112] New: acroread no longer included
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849112 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849112#c0 Summary: acroread no longer included Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 12.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Release Notes AssignedTo: ke@suse.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: coolo@suse.com Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- (see also the discussion on opensuse-factory) Given how many mails were sent on the factory mailinglist, I'd recommend a sniplet explaining that acroread was dropped. We can officially blame Adobe for it ;-) and hopefully also avoid lots of questions on the opensuse-$LANG mailinglists. ------------------------------------------ Adobe does no longer provide security updates for Adobe Reader (acroread). Therefore it was dropped from openSUSE. openSUSE includes various tools to view PDFs, like Okular on KDE, $GNOME_tool and $other_tool. They also support filling PDF forms, adding annotations etc. ------------------------------------------ The text is just a proposal, feel free to improve it and to replace the variables. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

FWIW, I tested the current Acroread 10 and 11 for Windows XP under Wine on openSUSE 13.1 ... It does not install. :(
We should not add the Wine paragraph for now.
Found some links on google. Bad news. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=810094 Too old. http://askubuntu.com/questions/250846/how-to-install-adobe-reader-x-in-ubunt... No go. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=3156 Only up to version 9. Forms do not work. Only alternative is using Windows in virtual machine, or old acroread for linux. Perhaps jail it in an apparmor profile. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok, done. Closing now, because the RN part is done. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
From my point of view I would explicitly inform openSUSE users

err...
...so that there is nothing what openSUSE could do regarding any issue.
not 'what', 'that' :-)
I think that it should be acknowledged that the available Linux tools do not fully support forms (no javascript), and signatures not at all, so that for these you need Windows tools (or Android, which is gratis). Foxit seems to support those features and runs under Wine; acroread X doesn't, but the wine people are improving that situation.
Ie, all known alternatives should be mentioned, IMO.
Carlos, I'd vote to add that detailed info to the opensuse wiki. I'd happily add a pointer from the release notes document to such an acroread wiki page. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The following is only my personal proposal for a more informative and more explicit text but I am not at all a decision maker here:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3.4. Adobe Reader (acroread) and Other PDF Readers
Adobe no longer provides (security) updates for Adobe Reader (acroread). Therefore the acroread package was dropped from the distribution to protect openSUSE users.
Adobe Reader is non-free proprietary binary-only software from Adobe so that there is nothing what openSUSE could do regarding any issue.
openSUSE includes various PDF viewing tools like Okular, Evince, and xpdf-poppler. These tools are actively maintained and get security fixes from openSUSE and their upstream authors.
openSUSE users who are interested in Adobe Reader need to contact Adobe directly, for example online via http://www.adobe.com/products/reader.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
coolo, please approve Johannes' proposal. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok, good for me. Please add that link. Is the page created already, or do we have to create it yet? If so, can somebody suggest an appropriate title? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I created http://en.opensuse.org/Adobe_Reader
I am not at all an expert regarding Adobe Reader so that I appreciate any contribution to that openSUSE wiki page!
I have added a long paragraph, and some additions.
In particular I would like to have therein an URL to an official statement from Adobe regarding no longer updates from Adobe for Adobe Reader for Linux.
I linked a table that shows product lifetime, and added text indicating where it says that version 9 is out of maintenance. However, someone has to revise my edits and authorize them. I do not have that permission. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
