[Bug 810867] New: Freeze at boot time after loading microcode update
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=810867 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=810867#c0 Summary: Freeze at boot time after loading microcode update Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jimoe@sohnen-moe.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:19.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/19.0 Hardware: AMD Athlon II x4 (635), 4GB RAM (non-ECC), Asus m3a78-em motherboard (I originally report this in issue #761728, but the OP observed that this is nothing like the issue he has. So, here I am. I do not recall the kernel version of the original report; whatever was released for late Oct 2012. current version: linux v3.4.33-2.24-desktop x86_64) So far two systems (of 5) have shown the tendency to freeze during boot. The freeze occurs immediately after loading the microcode. The chance of a freeze is about 50%. Oct 28 19:47:08 linux kernel: [ 2.268561] [drm] Loading RS780 Microcode ... bunch o' stuff ... Boot computer 2. Hope it completes Actual Results: This is apparently a timing issue of some sort. The computer that shows the worst case will not boot when cold; allow it to warm for minute then a hard restart usually works. Yet it fails to boot when fully warmed up, say, a restart after updates. Then a bit of cooling time is needed. But not too much. Ack! Expected Results: It completes booting up normally. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I cannot definitively say that it is fixed since it appeared to be a timing error that was sensitive to RAM quantity and temperature. It could be that none of the computers hit that unlucky window anymore. Or it may be fixed permanently. It is probably safe to declare it fixed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
