[Bug 559872] New: KDM login with winbind fails
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872#c0 Summary: KDM login with winbind fails Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Applications AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: roger@opq.se QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091103 SUSE/3.5.5-1.1.2 Firefox/3.5.5 On an openSUSE 11.2 system, I have joined the local active directory via YaST. It works fine. I can ssh to the system as a AD user with no problem. After this was set up, KDM stopped working. I see this in /var/log/messages: Nov 30 18:16:24 rst0 kdm_greet[1587]: GreeterPlugin winbind does not exist kde4-kgreeter-plugins-4.3.1-7.5.i586 is installed, and the following files are in place: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 34460 2009-11-02 17:49 /usr/lib/kde4/kgreet_classic.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 26280 2009-11-02 17:49 /usr/lib/kde4/kgreet_generic.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 46904 2009-11-02 17:49 /usr/lib/kde4/kgreet_winbind.so Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Join an active directory. restart kdm. 2. try to log in via kdm. 3. Actual Results: KDM says there is no greeter plugin, and then exits to a character login. Expected Results: KDM with the winbind part of the login screen, and a winbind authenticated login. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You might help yourself with a Samba server configured as Domain Controller (DC). That should provide enough for testing the KDM greater winbind functionality. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872#c3 --- Comment #3 from Roger Oberholtzer <roger@opq.se> 2009-12-07 13:24:37 UTC --- I just checked this machine after updating to the latest of everything (including KDE 4.3.4) and doing a reboot. I was surprised to see this: root 1103 1 0 14:07 ? 00:00:00 /opt/kde3/bin/kdm root 1585 1574 0 14:07 ? 00:00:00 /opt/kde3/bin/kdm_greet Could it be correct that the kdm should be the one in /opt/kde3? On another system (same KDE 4.3.4 and all updated today) it is running /usr/bin/kdm. There is a /usr/bin/kdm on the problem system. It just seems not to be running. /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager has: DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" Could this have anything to do with the defaults you get when the account is made, and before you log in? Perhaps that default has, as the last session, KDE3? The user was created fresh on the 11.2 system when logging in via ssh and was validated against the Active Directory. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872#c4 --- Comment #4 from Roger Oberholtzer <roger@opq.se> 2010-03-18 12:02:23 UTC --- I have now had a chance to duplicate (and correct) this problem. I did an update of a 10.3 system using the 11.2 install DVD. I let it do the usual updates to that install to get any bug fixes since the 11.2 release. And I got the original problem again. Luckily I was in the same room as this machine, and not across the county. The problem is that the 11.2 install does not update the DISPLAYMANAGER variable in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager from kde to kde4. So, it is running /opt/kde3/bin/kdm, and not the expected /usr/bin/kdm. Changing the DISPLAYMANAGER variable to kdm4 solved the issue. At least it did on a machine as described in the paragraph above. I will have to see if the machine that prompted the original report also can be corrected with this edit. The reason I am uncertain is that I see that when I did the 10.3->11.2 upgrade, the upgrade process complained that it could not install samba-winbind. I ignored this, and let the install complete. This results in the old 10.3 samba-sinbind binaries being left on the system - and they are not compatible with the 11.2 install. But I see that the update the install does got a newer version of samba-winbind and installed that. So, perhaps the real solution to this bug is (1) edit the DISPLAYMANAGER variable and (2) update samba-winbind. OOC, why are there things left in /opt/kde3/bin after the 11.2 update? Especially things like kdm. And there are others. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559872#c5 --- Comment #5 from Lars Müller <lmuelle@novell.com> 2010-07-26 13:00:53 UTC --- You still see /opt/kde3/ as there are still some KDE 3 pieces in use in oS 11.2 and 11.3. For example kdelibs3 Call "find /opt/kde3/ -print0 | xargs -0 rpm -qf | sort -u" and you know this. /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager:DISPLAYMANAGER should be set to "". That's the default and if you follow this approach the display manager available is taken. Check the init script code to see how the case is handled if multiple DMs are installed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

While from 11.0 on, 'kdm' defaulted to kdm4 and to use kde3 kdm you had to manually specify kdm3, for some reason in 11.3 that logic was mucked up so that simply specifying 'kdm' defaulted to an empty-string being selected as the DM defaulting to the plain old xdm greeter. I have confirmed that specifying kdm4 explicitly will give you the kde4 kdm greeter. So for 11.3 the current state of things in sysconfig for specifying your display manager under /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager is as follows: kdm3 -> kde3 kdm & greeter kdm -> xdm & greeter kdm4 -> kde4 kdm & greeter So the code needs to be fixed so that 'kdm' gives you the 'kde4 kdm' as it has done since 11.0 up until now.... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hard to say if it still exists as a problem in subsequent releases of openSUSE. I think there have been other DISPLAYMANAGER setting errors in various packages since this was reported. The general issue of DISPLAYMANAGER being set wrong after updating packages, with various resulting problems, seems to pop up every couple of months. But I would imagine that this specific report can be closed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
