[Bug 304650] New: [y/n] in zypper not translated?
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=304650 Summary: [y/n] in zypper not translated? Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 2 Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: libzypp AssignedTo: kkaempf@novell.com ReportedBy: martin@martinm-76.dk QAContact: kkaempf@novell.com Found By: --- Hello again. Testing the danish localization texts I got the message: Fortsæt? [y/n] -- which should have been: Fortsæt? [j/n] Pressing y didn't work as y was translated to j: Fortsæt? [y/n] Ugyldigt svar 'y', indtast 'j' eller 'n': j It looks very much like this [y/n] has not been localized. It is nowhere to be found in zypper.da.po, nor I suspect in zypper.pot. Please investigate. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't think It's a good idea. When using zypper I have English keyboard layout enabled. So when I'm prompted about confirmation (y/n) if it would be translated I'll have to switch layout. What's not so convenient.
But then you probably don't want to use translated zypper at all, and use English version only (?). I don't think it is a good idea to mix languages like this either, although i can imagine how annoying this must be for users who have to switch the keyboard to write latin characters. Also, this probably has to be left on translator's judgment to decide what's best for his/her language. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No need to translate this, it's already done as part of the system. Check the glibc manual and use: YESSTR and NOSTR.
You can even use the function rpmatch (line) from
for this.
Thanx for the tip! There's always something to learn :O) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, I want to use fully localized zypper but when I'm asking to enter something I don't want to change layout. I believe this is is a normal practice for languages with non-latin characters.
Also, this probably has to be left on translator's judgment to decide what's best for his/her language.
Yes, I've left "y/n" string untranslated. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In the case of Danish, it would make most sense to use 'j' and 'n', but I would be happy to have 'y' work as 'j' as well. I do not know if there are any languages where 'y' is no or 'n' is yes, but if you leave a translator comment that 'y' is always yes and 'n' is always no and that in addition to that you can enter a localized value, I think we can all be happy.
I will do so using rpmatch() as suggested in comment #5. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
