[Bug 224086] New: Update crashes when including Add-on media
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224086 Summary: Update crashes when including Add-on media Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ptenhoopen@adacplastics.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Updating from 10.2 Beta 2 to 10.2 RC1. Selected the Update option and checked the box to "Include Add-on products from separate media". Selected CD as the source, and inserted the Add-on CD after clicking the Eject option, and proceeded with the update. The first time, the installation reported an "Error with installation", and I had to reboot because I couldn't cancel the Add-on option. The second time I tried the update, following the same steps, it went to a black screen after trying to continue the update after inserting the CD, and I had to reboot again. I was able to successfully complete the update by leaving the Add-on option unchecked. I later used the YaST "Add-on Product" option to install what I needed from the Add-on CD. This was on a Dell Inspiron 5000e with 192 MB RAM. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

You have attached a non-erroneous logs. That's why I cannot tell what was the problem. Of course, there are some other possibilities to catch the problem... YaST Remote Logging in Installation -> log the installation process to the remote NFS server. http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Remote_Logging_in_Installation If you encounter the "Error with installation", try to switch to the console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 immediately. If it didn't work, you cold try another thing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+x _before_ you select to add an Add-On product. This will open an xterm. So now, you have an installation process and xterm. Use Alt+Tab to switch between them. If it hangs, you might try to do something in that xterm. You could also start 'top' in that xterm and see what happens. Anyway, I think that the problem is something else then error in using add-on product. You just have less than recommended amount of RAM which is at least 256 MB :( Please, try this: http://en.opensuse.org/Installation_with_Little_Memory -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

We are permanently working on lowering the memory requirements. Actually your computer is the proof that an update can work on computer with about 77% of recommended RAM size :) And that's a great success. Closing as enhancement-later. Maybe a check for free memory can be implemented. For instance before user tries to use an add-on media and maybe on other places. The solution would be also to turn the swap-on just after "update" method is selected. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
