[Bug 628698] New: [cups-drivers-splix] problems with CLP-315 printer
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628698 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628698#c0 Summary: [cups-drivers-splix] problems with CLP-315 printer Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: af1n@o2.pl QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100626 SUSE/3.6.6-1.2 Firefox/3.6.6 There are 2 problems: 1. Please enable J-BIG compression in Splix "SpliX J-BIG compression algorithm has been disabled during the compilation. Please recompile SpliX and enable the J-BIG compression algorithm." 2. Cups is looking for cms profile in: /usr/share/cups/model/samsung/cms/CLP-300cms but the current path in opensuse for this file is: /usr/share/cups/model/Samsung/cms/CLP-300cms If i don't link: ln -s /usr/share/cups/model/Samsung /usr/share/cups/model/samsung i get the following error: "SpliX Cannot open CMS file /usr/share/cups/model/samsung/cms/CLP-300cms (2)" There is actually a third problem... Neither cups nor Yast doesn't detect this printer. I had to go around this problem using URL based discovery parallel:/dev/usb/lp0. There is also a problem with udev, it keeps the permissions of /dev/usb/lp0 as crw-rw---- 1 root users 180, 0 2010-08-05 14:48 /dev/usb/lp0 and cups cannot access it, i get the following error from cups: "Unable to open device file "/dev/usb/lp0": Permission denied" When i change the rights using: chmod a+rwx /dev/usb/lp0 Then cups starts to display the J-BIG error and cms errors :) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. zypper install cups-drivers-splix 2. plug in the printer 3. do: chmod a+rwx /dev/usb/lp0 4. do: ln -s /usr/share/cups/model/Samsung /usr/share/cups/model/samsung 5. add the printer to cups using parallel:/dev/usb/lp0 6. print a test page Actual Results: A nice set of cups errors, like: - "SpliX J-BIG compression algorithm has been disabled during the compilation" - "SpliX Cannot open CMS file /usr/share/cups/model/samsung/cms/CLP-300cms (2)" - "Unable to open device file "/dev/usb/lp0": Permission denied" Expected Results: A nice colorful test painted by the printer. I get the following errors in dmesg after connecting the printer: [860262.191049] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 55 [860262.246967] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860262.456106] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 56 [860262.511347] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860262.721068] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 57 [860262.776353] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860262.986397] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 58 [860263.041601] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860263.251342] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 59 [860263.306627] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860263.516283] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 60 [860263.571606] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860263.781360] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 61 [860263.836594] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860264.046309] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 62 [860264.102591] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860264.313138] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 63 [860264.827040] usb 1-3: device not accepting address 63, error -71 [860264.929093] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 64 [860264.984419] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860265.194049] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 65 [860265.321862] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/all, error -71 [860265.424077] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 66 [860265.940064] usb 1-3: device not accepting address 66, error -71 [860266.042074] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 67 [860266.068997] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [860266.195364] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [860266.399067] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 68 [860266.425496] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/all, error -71 [860266.426344] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3 [860266.667089] usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 33 [860266.801115] usb 4-1: not running at top speed; connect to a high speed hub [860266.834120] usb 4-1: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=328e [860266.834129] usb 4-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [860266.834135] usb 4-1: Product: CLP-310 Series [860266.834140] usb 4-1: Manufacturer: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628698 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628698#c1 Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Priority|P5 - None |P4 - Low Status|NEW |ASSIGNED Platform|x86-64 |All Summary|[cups-drivers-splix] |cups-drivers-splix should |problems with CLP-315 |not contain PPDs for |printer |printers which require JBIG --- Comment #1 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2010-08-05 14:37:30 UTC --- We cannot enable JBIG compression because there are legal/patent issues with JBIG. The Samsung CLP-300/CLP-315 printers require JBIG compression so that you cannot use our splix driver for this model. The bug in our splix driver is that it contains PPDs for models which require JBIG compression like /usr/share/cups/model/Samsung/clp300.ppd.gz so that you can set up print queues which cannot work. Another bug is the "Cannot open CMS file" issue. The rest is caused by an insufficiency of the USB interface of the printer. Basically it does not identify itself as usual USB printers do so that this device is not recognized as an USB printer and therefore it is not detected by CUPS (YaST uses the CUPS detection because in the end it won't print if CUPS cannot detect it) and also udev cannot set the usual permissions for USB printer device files (rw-rw-r-- root lp). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628698 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628698#c2 --- Comment #2 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2010-08-05 15:10:57 UTC --- Our splix driver is version splix-1.1.1 where the sources contain neither "Cannot open CMS file" nor "compression algorithm has been disabled" but the splix-2.0.0 sources contain those strings. Therefore your installed cups-drivers-splix package is not from us (i.e. form openSUSE/Novell) but from whatever other package repository which would usually make your bug report invalid for us. In any case please report issues with third-party software also to the developers of the third-party software. Nevertheless your report helps me to be aware of possible issues in our splix driver (we do not have any of those models which need the splix driver so that we cannot test it on our own). I will have a look at your reported issues, probably when I work on bug #514994 I may upgrade to an up-to-date splix version then. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately there exists no maintainer/bugowner "anubisg1" in our bugzilla so that I re-assign it for now to "lnussel@suse.de" because he made this RPM changelog entry: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun Oct 4 19:11:19 CEST 2009 - lnussel@suse.de - disable JBIG by default (patent problems) - move ppd files to subdirs with captital first letter as used by cups-drivers --------------------------------------------------------------------- Ludwig, it is perfectly correct to disable JBIG but then you should remove accordingly those PPDs for printers which require JBIG (see comment #1). It may help to inspect the ppd/*.drv source files to find out which models require JBIG. It seems your change to "captital first letter" causes the "SpliX Cannot open CMS file /usr/share/cups/model/samsung/cms/..." error, see comment #0. I wonder about this RPM changelog entry: --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun Oct 4 20:45:50 UTC 2009 - andrea@opensuse.org - re-enabled JBIG since i need it, it's possible to disable it with "%%define with_jbigkit 0" --------------------------------------------------------------------- According to this bug it seems JBIG is correctly disabled in our package but I wonder if we can rely on it that JBIG is disabled in our packages in any case - if it would become enabled by accident we may run into huge trouble because of distributing patented software. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Therefore you could just as well keep the upstream defaults so that for example cups-drivers-splix may use /usr/share/cups/model/samsung/ or /usr/share/cups/model/splix regardless that cups-drivers uses /usr/share/cups/model/Samsung/ I.e. perhaps it is best to revert all changes and patches regarding the PPD directory in cups-drivers-splix to be in full compliance with upstream here? For example the PPDs in the hplip-hpijs package are in /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/ regardless that cups-drivers uses /usr/share/cups/model/HP/ and the PPDs in manufacturer-PPDs are in various directories like /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hp/ regardless of what is used in hplip-hpijs and cups-drivers. In contrast what matters is the '*Manufacturer' value in the PPDs. It should be the same spelling for one same manufacturer to get all PPDs for this manufacturer listed under the same manufacturer name in printer setup tools (e.g. "HP" versus "Hewlett Packard" versus "Hewlett-Packard" would cause annoyance for the users who like to set up a HP printer). The '*Manufacturer' values in SpliX' PPDs are perfectly o.k.: *Manufacturer: "Dell" *Manufacturer: "Samsung" *Manufacturer: "Xerox" -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
