https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=659023 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=659023#c0 Summary: radeon: monitor is flashing black with kernel: 2.6.37-rc5 from repo: Kernel:/HEAD Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: markus_stephan@freenet.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 SUSE/3.6.12-0.7.1 Firefox/3.6.12 I have installed the latest X.Org from the X11:/XOrg and kernel 2.6.37-rc5 from Kernel:/HEAD repository. After booting with kernel 2.6.37-rc5 the monitor is flashing black every 1 ~ 2 sec. and the system is unusable. Booting with the latest update kernel 2.6.34.7-0.5 everything is working OK! (Could be faster ..., this was the intention to try the latest X.Org and kernel, but no luck this time) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.install latest X.Org and kernel from X11:/XOrg and Kernel:/Head repository 2.reboot to kernel 2.6.37-rc5 3. Actual Results: monitor is flashing black every 1 ~ 2 sec. output from hwinfo --gfx 27: PCI 105.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA) [Created at pci.318] Unique ID: ul7N.i+H4S8GgTE4 Parent ID: vSkL.dKOgGICyH72 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:05.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:01:05.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "ATI RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]" Vendor: pci 0x1002 "ATI Technologies Inc" Device: pci 0x791e "RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]" SubVendor: pci 0x105b "Foxconn International, Inc." This is a big regression for all AMD RS690 users, because the system is unusable. (System works perfectly with 11.3 kernel and latest Xorg) The monitor is flashing black (blinking black) every 1 ~ 2 seconds. Switching to console with ALt-F1 makes the system usable again (stops blinking) trying to switch to an other console with Alt-F2/F3/F4/F5/F6 makes a black screen, nothing is displayed, switching back to the root console with Alt-F1 works, which means I could see what I'm writing and could run the commands for the attachments. My hope was to get this fixed before 11.4 is out, so I'm raising the "Importance" from "Normal" to "Major" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just completely unusable. Sometimes, it does work normal (lets say 1 out of ten) but screen is very much filled with artifacts. I knew this before, because on my openSUSE 11.3 installation, i've upgraded my xorg to the one from the XOrg repo, both tested factory and openSUSE_11.3. They work, as long as you stick with the kernel shipped with 11.3 2.6.37 and even 2.6.38rc4 show the flickering graphics. Description of what happens. System starts up, shows grub. Next i see some boot messages for a few seconds and after that (when KMS becomes active..) the screen continues to show boot messages but with intense flickering graphics. Now comes the funny part.... When logging in into kde via kdm and I blindly suspend the system, it returns from suspend with stable graphics. This is the first time I message here (reporting a bug in the bugzilla) so please tell me what you need so I can help. output from hwinfo --gfxcard: PCI 100.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA) [Created at pci.318] Unique ID: VCu0.yCVxDdqVuW0 Parent ID: vSkL.tc6F4KcTPH4 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:01:00.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "ATI M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300]" Vendor: pci 0x1002 "ATI Technologies Inc" Device: pci 0x714a "M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300]" SubVendor: pci 0x1734 "Fujitsu Technology Solutions" SubDevice: pci 0x10cd Driver: "radeon" Driver Modules: "drm" Memory Range: 0xd0000000-0xd7ffffff (ro,non-prefetchable) I/O Ports: 0x2000-0x2fff (rw) Memory Range: 0xf8100000-0xf810ffff (rw,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xf8120000-0xf813ffff (ro,non-prefetchable,disabled) IRQ: 29 (80611 events) I/O Ports: 0x3c0-0x3df (rw) Module Alias: "pci:v00001002d0000714Asv00001734sd000010CDbc03sc00i00" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: radeon is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe radeon" Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #9 (PCI bridge) Primary display adapter: #24 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Artifacts still show up somehow during kdm and within kde. Terminal doesn't show any problems anymore. What i do have now (might be a new introduced bug wich i will report if it didn't happen already) is that sometimes [1 out of 10] the system freezes with loading udev now. But the case of flicker is solved for me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I still try all the latest stable kernels when they come out in the 11.3 stable kernel repository, but they all are showing the same 'blackouts'. Only the latest 11.3 update kernel, 2.6.34.7 is running fine on my system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
