Selecting the "Auto eth0" from the network manager would just fail to connect but without providing any hint on the problem. I have tried to force a DHCP request with: dhclient eth0 I got the following error: Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.1.1 Copyright 2004-2008 Internet Systems Consortium. For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/ /etc/dhclient.conf line 28: no option named network-number in space dhcp request subnet-mask, network-number, ^ /etc/dhclient.conf line 33: ntp-servers: expected option name. netbios-node-type, netbios-scope, ntp-servers; And then the DHCP offer was rejected with: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 5 DHCPOFFER from 192.168.0.1: no subnet-mask option. Editing /etc/dhclient.conf and removing the "network-number" option fixed the problem.
