[Bug 667290] New: computer doesn't wake up after suspending the system and crashes while hibernating
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=667290 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=667290#c0 Summary: computer doesn't wake up after suspending the system and crashes while hibernating Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cameronpoe@poczta.fm QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; pl-PL; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 SUSE/3.6.13-0.2.1 Firefox/3.6.13 I have that problem with suspend and hibernation since a very beginning when I installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 on my HP Compaq Presario V5245EU laptop with ram upgraded to 2 GB and hard drive exchanged with WD 250 GB. When I type in the console "s2ram -n" I get: Machine unknown This machine can be identified by: sys_vendor = "Hewlett-Packard" sys_product = "Presario V5000 (EW848EA#ABU) " sys_version = "F.54" bios_version = "F.54" I have updated bios to the newest version a long time ago. I scanned my ram and it passed the test. I have never had any problems with my hardware on windows XP and suspend and hibernation works perfect on this operating system. I can't say the same thing about Linux systems :( I have tested suspend feature on openSUSE, Mandriva, Debian, Gentoo, Kubuntu, Fedora with LXDE, YlmfOS with Gnome and I have problem with waking up the system from suspend on all of them. Basically when I select suspend from menu or type the command in console laptop goes to sleep fine but when I switch it back on I can hear the cd-rom waking up, I see hdd led flashing for a wile but I can't actually hear it working, screen and wi-fi led won't even blink and after few seconds I can hear the fan on a high speed but that's it, keyboard doesn't respond either. I have to press and hold the switch button for few seconds to restart the system. With hibernation it is different. When I select hibernate from menu or type the command in console it freezes immediately when I get hibernating splash screen or the message "s2disk: Snapshotting system" on the screen. And again I have to press and hold the switch button for few seconds to restart the system. I haven't had that problem with hibernation in Mandriva 2010.1 Free x86_64. My hdd partitions look like that: /dev/sda1 - windows C - 10 GB /dev/sda2 - swap - 2.5 GB /dev/sda3 - windows D - 111 GB /dev/sda5 - / - 10 GB /dev/sda6 - /home - 98 GB I was the same partition layout when I had Mandriva installed. I have the system up to date (kernel 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop with KDE 4.4.4 release 3). I use original open drivers for my graphics card and wi-fi. I tried to update pm-utils and suspend packages to the newest and oldest versions (1.4.1 and 0.99) but it didn't help :( Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have that problem with suspend and hibernation since a very beginning when I installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 on my HP Compaq Presario V5245EU laptop with ram upgraded to 2 GB and hard drive exchanged with WD 250 GB.

I got the hibernation and suspend working, but there is another problem. Hibernation is working fine on my laptop but only when I add 'nomodeset' into kernel command line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst Suspend will work too but only if I add 'nomodeset' and change 'vga=0x317' to 'vga=0' or delete that entry. Unfortunately with this 'nomodeset' my KDE applications get 'crazy'. Basically while watching a movie or browsing the Internet with Firefox or even just like that it logs me out and I have to put my password and wait for it to start a new session. It logs me out very often so I can't have this 'nomodeset' on :( Does anyone know how to fix it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I tried to change this vga=0x317 (vga=791) which is only 1024x768 to the max but I couldn't. When I use 'vga=ask' it appears 1024x768 is the maximum resolution I can select from. When it is set by default to vga=0x317 and I add 'nomodeset' the hibernation works fine but suspend won't. If I change vga command to vga=0 or vga=normal the system suspend will work perfect but it has to be along with nomodeset. So to be clearly understood - suspend on my laptop won't work with just 'vga=0' and no 'nomodeset' command. The big problem is that 'nomodeset' makes my system very unstable. The other command changed to vga=0 doesn't affect my system stability. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
