http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=522837 Summary: Installed system is unnecessarily tied to one hardware Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: poeml@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Hi, I'm producing a VirtualBox appliance for evaluation of a software that I wrote, and I run into the issue that the openSUSE 11.1 system I use as base doesn't transfer well. The root fs is mounted (via /etc/fstab) by storage device path, not by storage UUID. This means that the image won't boot for anybody else except me. The device path differs when running VirtualBox somewhere else. I have to modify /etc/fstab to make the image usable (and likewise I have to change the grub configuration, and recreate the initial ramdisk). I would suggest to use a more flexible method, mounting by UUID or maybe by device node, by default. I can imagine that I would run into the same problems when cloning a system to new hardware. Would this be feasible? If I missed a different way to configure this during installation, I may have missed it, either because it wasn't obvious enough or because I didn't pay attention (because I didn't expect this issue).
