[Bug 746672] New: Gnome screensaver timing options are insufficient
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=746672 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=746672#c0 Summary: Gnome screensaver timing options are insufficient Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jdelvare@suse.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User Blocker: --- In the Gnome control center (aka System Parameters), item "Screen", option "Turn off after" has the following possible values: 1 minute 2 minutes 3 minutes 5 minutes 10 minutes 30 minutes 1 hour Not being able to select values greater than 1 hour is a problem in practice: I'm using a DVB client (me-tv) which fails to inhibit the screen-saver, so I would like to be able to turn the screensaver off manually. But 1 hour is not enough to watch a movie. So having options "3 hours" and "Never" would be convenient. Please consider adding these. As a side note, the first 4 options are essentially the same, so if the idea was to keep things simple, 2 or 3 of these should be dropped IMHO. Or if you really think that this degree of control is desirable, then it might be more convenient to just let the user type the amount freely and select the unit (minutes or hours), instead of offering a limited and arbitrary list of options. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For 3 hours just set like below. $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-display-ac 10800 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=746672 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=746672#c2 --- Comment #2 from Jean Delvare <jdelvare@suse.com> 2012-02-21 12:52:46 UTC --- Thanks Bin Li. Upstream's position is quite sad, but at least now I know what to (not) expect, and it is good to know that at least I can control the setting from the command line. I'll give a try to the "Presentation Mode" gnome-shell extension to, it might do what I want. I have to say I am not exactly optimistic with regards to Gnome's future. Their inability to listen to with their own users is dramatic. Their policy of keeping things simple makes a lot of sense, but only if applied with the eyes opened. Right now it doesn't seem to fit the real world. If they continue that way, they will start losing users. Or we'll see a lot of extensions from random developers to work around all the usability issues, and odds are it will cause as many problems as it will solved, as code quality and interaction between the extensions won't get as much review and testing as if the same code was part of the gnome project, not even mentioning security concerns. Plus gnome will start behaving differently from one user to the next, so the "Gnome user experience" can no longer be defined. I think this is opposite to what the Gnome developers are trying to do in the first place. My original reason for moving to Gnome (from Xfce) was to make it look more user-friendly to visitors. I didn't want my visitors to think that using Linux still implied a lot of command line and lack of integration. Now with Gnome 3, I am back to command line and lack of integration for most of my daily tasks, so the move qualifies as a failure. Sad but true. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Should be pretty non-intrusive, and maybe if many distributions do that, upstream Gnome will finally listen. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In keeping with the design goals of upstream GNOME, and realising that we just don't have enough resources to carry a patch like this forever, rebasing it every time a new version of the application is released by upstream, I am very sorry but I have to close this bug as WONTFIX. I hope you will understand. Please do try to push this with upstream if you feel this option is necessary. Thanks a lot! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
