I can get the card to be recognized by removing a 2GB DIMM. I have just updated to the latest Dell BIOS version A13 to see if the updated BIOS solved this problem. I sent these to Dell's BIOS developer. Below is his response: "First of all, we should make clear the key point for this issue. When I first became aware of this issue I said that the key point is: "Why does the WWAN memory BAR get allocated above 4GB?" The BIOS allocates each device memory BAR when the system boots. But when Linux starts up, the OS driver maybe reallocates the device memory BAR, thus causing the WWAN memory BAR error under Linux. I checked in the logs you sent and I found that this WWAN BAR always gets allocated just above the total available memory size. When the system had 2GB installed, it allocated at 0x88000000-0x8bffffff. When installed with 4GB, and memory reclaim is enabled, the available memory size will reach to 0x120000000, also indicated in E820 table. Now the BAR is allocated at 0x120000000-0x123ffffff. Actually in our BIOS code, we allocate PREFETCH memory start up from 0xE0000000, and MEM bar starts down from 0xF7000000. 4GB_A13 <4>PCI: Bus 4, cardbus bridge: 0000:03:01.0 <6> IO window: 0x00002000-0x000020ff <6> IO window: 0x00002400-0x000024ff <6> PREFETCH window: 0x120000000-0x123ffffff <6> MEM window: 0x124000000-0x127ffffff 2GB_A13 <4>PCI: Bus 4, cardbus bridge: 0000:03:01.0 <6> IO window: 0x00002000-0x000020ff <6> IO window: 0x00002400-0x000024ff <6> PREFETCH window: 0x88000000-0x8bffffff <6> MEM window: 0x8c000000-0x8fffffff So in summary, it seems like the Linux driver may be reallocating the device memory BAR. This can be tested by seeing how it is allocated when booting to DOS rather than Linux. Can you boot to DOS(maybe use a USB flash), and use a utility to dump the PCI device memory? This will tell us what is happening because when booting to DOS the driver will not load, so under this situation, we can check to see what the BIOS allocation is for the memory BAR." -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will install 32bit Opensuse11 on my system today and see if it works. What commands or details do I need to get from the system?
Thanks, Edward, for checking this. Can you use a utility to dump the PCI device memory? Am I reading the message log correctly that the device did not work? If it didn't work, then that kind of hurts our case to say that this is BIOS issue (since it works with Windows, but fails with 32 and 64 bit Linux). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yeah, the D830 and D630 and are very similar systems, so I'm not surprised at the same results.

Somehow I had forgotten this point you made earlier about SLED10SP2 working (and by the way, your original comments on this were private so people outside Novell would not have seen them). All of these data points of which OS's work and which don't, and which systems work and which don't are only useful to get an idea of where the root issue is. However.... I know this bug is reported against openSUSE 11.0, BUT...If this works with SLED10SP2 and doesn't work with SLED11 (currently at beta 6) then this would be a regression and would warrant further investigation by Novell. On the other hand, if this works with SLED11, then it will most likely work with openSUSE 11.1, since they are nearly the same. I sent the above info to the Dell BIOS developer and got the following reply: "These test results seem reasonable for D630, but for D830, we only did a similar 4GB memory support change on A13 and later, but you said it still fails at A09. In BIOS, we need to reserve some memory address for system memory map, such as PCI, PCIE system memory map. It is usually located in the top memory just below 4GB. Intel has memory reclaim technology. It allows the system to remap system memory to above 4GB, so it can release more useable memory under 4GB for the user. Before A13, we enabled Intel memory reclaim technology to remap system memory to above 4GB. But customers reported that sometimes some memory address content corrupted after S3 resume. So with A13 we quit using Intel memory reclaim technology, and used the usual method to allocate system memory map at the fixed address of 3.5GB(E0000000h)" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I regressed this BIOS back from A14 to A02 one step at a time and never got this to work with that release. Other contributors to this report tested on a D630, they were able to get an earlier BIOS to work. However they also tested 10.3 and said that it did work for them on all BIOSes, I do believe I recall that 11.1 was also tried and failed identically to 11.0.
