Debugging the issue, I found: dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.Hal /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend int32:0 which should suspend the machine to RAM, only gives Error org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.UnknownError: error: org.freedesktop.Hal.Error: Could not determine whether caller is privileged org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Error I guess that the KDE applet suffers the same issue. Maybe some sort of race condition during boot?
