[Bug 221139] New: boot screen defect on Dell Inspiron 500m
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=221139 Summary: boot screen defect on Dell Inspiron 500m Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jens@khmeros.info QAContact: jsrain@novell.com When I start the installation of beta2 on my Inspiron 500m I get the graphical boot screen first. But there are two problems with it: 1. Choosing the language menu shows garbage. The menu is just not drawn right. I can navigate and the selected language gets displayed ok but the rest is unreadable. All other menus are fine though! I believe it could be related to the size of the language menu. 2. The graphic card is not detected correctly. I get only 800x600 and Vesa as options while I have 1024x768 on my display. This is not a new problem I used to have this with 10.1 too and I could work around it by vga=0x305 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

In this case it's just that the 640x480 fallback resolution needs adjustments. I just did that. This would indicate a i845-like graphics card, which comes with a BIOS that does not support anything above 640x480 with 16 bit color. There is a catch with vga=0x305 [1024x768, 8bit], however: we recently added 'DefaultDepth 16' (I think along bug 220403), so that 'vga' option no longer works. Stefan, you're sure 'DefaultDepth 16' was really necessary for fbdev? Olaf is probably talking about a completely different problem. It doesn't make sense to keep an invalid Xserver option in the config file. BTW, # man xorg.conf: [...] DefaultDepth depth specifies which color depth the server should use by default. The -depth command line option can be used to override this. If neither is specified, the default depth is driver-specific, but in most cases is 8. (IIRC fbdev detects the correct color depth itself) Therefore I think it's the correct way to remove the DefaultColorDepth and it was indeed wrong to replace it with DefaultDepth. argh, and I readded it just today because DefaultDepth IS required to force depth 16. Which is wrong on non-ppc, because it cannot be forced.
For drivers that can not deal with it, there is code to remove it at runtime. That code is in YaST2.call around line 241. It should be the other way round. Only use DefaultDepth on ppc.
And that YaST2.call code is also wrong today because it looks at DefaultColorDepth. Ok. Then this needs to be adjusted as well.
