[Bug 441306] New: Kernel Update Kills System
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441306 Summary: Kernel Update Kills System Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: andrew@joako.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- I have run accross problems with Kernel updates on openSUSE 11.0 on a wide array of systems, something needs to be done to make the process better. Today I installed openSUSE 11.0 from the DVD via SSH. After the install was completed I did an online update which found a single package management update. After this update a message such as "the packages for package management have been updated. Restarting for other updates" and then the rest of the updates show up under YasT2 > Software > Online Update. One of these updates is a Kernel update. After applying all of these updates the system no longer boots. At the very minimum, the old Kernel needs to stay on the GRUB menu until the syste, successfully boots with the new kernel. Yes I know this is probably an easy fix, but try walking someone that is not familiar with Linux to fixing it over the telephone. Much harder than telling them "press down arrow and enter" (to select the previously installed and working Kernel from the GRUB menu). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

At first you have only two disks and during kernel upgrade your /dev/sdb is changed to /dev/sdc and new /dev/sdb appear, this confuse grub, because it translate to BIOS order and this change. Only sollution is rerun proposal, because your device map is not correct. There should not have been any hardware changes. But isn't the point of using /dev/disk/by-id that it will not get messed up due to the BIOS order?
Yes, for other bootloaders it work good. But grub needs bios order (thats why bios use hd0 and not device id, because it doesn't load udev, which create this device), so it doesn't help. But to your problem...when you install do you really have three disks? Because if so, then problem is in yast-Bootloader and yast-storage, which find and add only two disks to device.map. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Problem is that during update you attach some disk (usb, card reader) and disk is changed so sda is newly attached disk, sdb is raid (without visible partition) and sdc is direct disk. Because in device map is sda and sdb it is mapped to bad disks. This is already fixed in opensuse 11.1, where we use persistent names from udev. But this cannot be backported to 11.0 as it is really big change, because it have own problems which we must solve, so it is lot of code (also in storage). So what you can do is install new 11.1 or change in device map names to persistent names (you already have it in fstab) or don't attach any disk (also usb, also card reader) during kernel update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
