[Bug 214869] New: gnome-bluetooth does not find any devices to connect to
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214869 Summary: gnome-bluetooth does not find any devices to connect to Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Mobile Devices AssignedTo: behlert@novell.com ReportedBy: andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de QAContact: qa@suse.de gnome-bluetooth-0.8.0-9 is broken in a way that it never finds any devices to connect to. It's about the dialog that can be accessed in the following ways: 1) Install gnome-bluetooth, run "gnome-obex-send /your/favourite/file". A dialog pops up and asks which device /your/favourite/file should be sent to. But this dialog is always empty and never shows any devices. 2) Install gnome-phone-manager and run it. From the context menu of the tray icon, choose "Preferences -> Connection -> Bluetooth -> Choose". The same dialog appears, with the same behaviour: It's always empty. 3) Install nautilus-sendto and right-click an arbitrary file in nautilus. From the context menu, choose "Send to -> Bluetooth". This time it's not exactly the same dialog, but a drop-down menu, and it's again always empty. This is not a matter of not having a connection - the following things are working just fine: - "hcitool scan" from the command line (finds all devices) - obexfs (the filesystem of a cell phone is successfully mounted) - kdebluetooth (file transfers are working) This is a regression, gnome-bluetooth worked correctly in SUSE 10.1. The bluetooth services have been started manually (/etc/init.d/bluetooth start) because of bug 214867 (but that should not matter). Package versions: gnome-bluetooth-0.8.0-9 libbtctl-0.8.0-9 nautilus-sendto-0.7-9 openobex-1.3-13 bluez-libs-3.7-5 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214869 ------- Comment #2 from behlert@novell.com 2006-10-25 03:37 MST ------- Can you please try bluez-gnome and see if that works? gnome-bluetooth uses a deprecated interface I think, bluez-gnome uses the current one. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214869 ------- Comment #3 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-10-25 07:04 MST ------- OK, I tested bluez-gnome - with disappointing results. :-( bluez-gnome does not seem to have a "Send to" feature, it seems to be for receiving incoming connections only. I looked at the source tarball and that does indeed have a /sendto subdirectory, but unfortunately the following in Makefile.am: noinst_PROGRAMS = bluetooth-sendto So the bluetooth-sendto program is built, but not yet installed. I tried it nevertheless, and it's quite obvious why this programm is not yet installed: Right now it's more or less just a placeholder which displays a dialog, but does not send anything. Even worse, that part of gnome-bluetooth which bluez-gnome could replace (incoming connections) works just fine in gnome-bluetooth. Just the outgoing connections don't work. I found out something else. If I try to send a file using nautilus-sendto (which uses gnome-bluetooth), leave the dialog where it doesn't find any devices open, and then run kbtobexclient (from kdebluetooth) to send any file to the desired device, then the nautilus-sendto dialog finds the device in exactly that moment when kbtobexclient starts the file transfer, and further file transfers with nautilus-sendto work afterwards. So it seems that gnome-bluetooth just blocks itself while establishing the connection, but as soon as it's *somehow* there, the transfers are working. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214869 ------- Comment #4 from sbrabec@novell.com 2006-11-14 04:05 MST ------- We cannot obsolete gnome-bluetooth yet, because bluez-gnome does not support OBEX (and vice versa, gnome-bluetooth dfoes not support PIN dialog). Seife, do you know if MArcel wants to add OBEX in bluez-gnome soon? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214869 ------- Comment #6 from a_hanley@optusnet.com.au 2006-12-12 01:44 MST ------- I too found that gnome-bluetooth did not find any bluetooth devices unless the other bluetooth device tried to establish a connection however it the proceeded to crash. This regression is somewhat disappointing considering a very polished distro overall. I tried the hcitool and was able to scan devices within range so there is definatley something not quite right. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214869 ------- Comment #8 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-01-30 04:23 MST ------- There is a new insight to this, someone from the list gnome-bluetooth@lists.usefulinc.com made me aware, that if you choose a file from nautilus and select send to Bluetooth(OBEX) from the context menu and at the same time issue "gnome-obex-send -d BADDR" ( in my case gnome-obex-send -d 00:16:20:C2:AC:6F ) from a terminal, then the destination will become visible in the "Send To:" Field and you can actually transfer the file. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
