I've been going through mail lists, support forums but nothing seems to work. This are the tech specs from the motherboard I'm using: http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=YwIVDOTcvIMHZdTy Please let me know if any logs or conf files are needed. Thanks in advance, Roberto. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install OpenSuse 11.2. 2. Audio driver recognized but microphone is not working. Actual Results: Microphone not working. I've tried setting it to a medium level with the Microphone volume @ 100% but still there was silence after trying to hear my recordings... So, as you can see, OpenSuse seems to recognize the sound card but just the microphone is the one not working. In case you're doubting it might be the Microphone on the motherboard, I've installed Windows Vista 64 bits and it worked just fine. Hope that helps. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So far, I have no further clue since I have no hardware. And remote debugging doesn't help for such a case -- you need to figure out by yourself. In general, reduce the test layer as much as possible. Avoid PulseAudio, use ALSA directly via "arecord -Dplughw -vv foo.wav", at best without graphics. Then check the widget connection of the codec. Check which ADC ("Audio Input" widget) is actually used (it can be seen in the codec#* proc file during recording). Follow the widget connection. Check the amp value is properly set (unmuted and adjusted) in the route, between ADC and the input pin in the end. You may need to reconnect the widget via hda-emu directly to a different pin. Some details are found in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio.txt. If any result is found with the procedure above, let me know. In general, reduce the test layer as much as possible
What did you mean by that? Testing no much? Is not clear.
Avoid PulseAudio, use ALSA directly via "arecord -Dplughw -vv foo.wav", at best > without graphics.
I'll record from the command line as suggested.

In general, reduce the test layer as much as possible
What did you mean by that? Testing no much? Is not clear.
The sound subsystem consists of many layers, from the lowest kernel level until the API level. Avoid the complex routing (e.g. via alsa-lib plugin over PulseAudio over gstreamer, etc) but try to test as simple as possible.
Avoid PulseAudio, use ALSA directly via "arecord -Dplughw -vv foo.wav", at best > without graphics.

Thank you for your detailed post. I am also owner of an Asus laptop and the mic with pulseaudio is always a trouble. But, i remembered that the first time i got it solved i writed it down, because it tooks me a lot of time to figure it out, so i am writing it here, perhaps it is your case too. I am using OpenSUSE 11.3 right now. MIC was NOT working, but output DOES. ASUS N51TP The driver is snd-hda-intel. The prodcedure that worked for 11.3 is: Yast2 -> Sound - Choose the sound driver (with index 0) -> Edit - Choose the "model" item -> Edit And write the model: m51va THAT worked for ME YOURS may be a different model NOTE: Only the frontpanel is working, not the embeded mic at the side of the camera, which is kind of useless.
