Despite my efforts to remove any system configuration, NetworkManager creates a system connection 'Auto eth0' that uses DHCP, this is used in preference to your user manual IP connection. Auto eth0 fails when there are no DHCP services on the network, and NM tries your user manual IP connection, which works. If I configure a Manual IP in NM AND DHCP Services exist on the LAN - my manual configuration is ignored! Result that IF DHCP Services are present on any LAN any Manual IP configuration will always be ignored. Therefore there is NO possible way of creating a static IP with NM IF DHCP Services are present! A Static IP is only granted when NM has the configured static IP AND NM finds NO DHCP Services present on offer on the LAN. In the case where NO DHCP Services are present AND a static IP is configured and assigned the IP is only allocated after ALL other System Tray Applications appear on the KDE Desktop. The normal boot process will NOT allocate a static IP under these conditions and will only assign the at last phase of KDE default desktop loading. This situation has been deemed as 'invalid' in Bug 508513, however I accept this, despite my personal opposition, and understanding the logic is not going to help the user. All the enormous amount of time and raising scores of bugs by myself, may now be seen as correctly identifying a real problem. Despite most all of them being closed as INVALID.we may now be in a position to consider all my IP related bugs as actually perfectly valid. You do realise that without DHCP Services being present, our default 11.x automated installation will always FALL-OVER, as we wrongly presume that DHCP Services are always available on all LAN's, which is FAR from the truth in the real world. My sincere thanks for just believing in me and that I have never opened a bug, despite its resolution code most always being INVALID since 10.2, that was not perfectly sound in the first instance. Thank you Will for daring to actually validate this bug on a test LAN where DHCP Service were not present so you can see for yourself and consider the enormous repercussions. My personal faith has been restored Will,just by you daring to actually test the bug description and reproducibility. The mere notion that every RC of openSuse or any change to the management of any NIC, from Installation to operation; that is NOT tested on a test LAN where NO DHCP Services are offered by the test LAN environment, begs disbelief. There are a litany of bugs that I have raised when I have performed tests on a LAN where NO DHCP Services are offered. It is clearly evident as in this bug, that NO testing is done by suse.de on such a test LAN environment. I would suggest very strongly that suse.de commits to test every RC from Installation to changes in the management of NICs on a test LAN where NO DHCP Services what so ever are offered. The assumption that DHCP Services are always available on every LAN is short-sighted to say the least.
