[Bug 551771] New: Orphaned Packages package group in YaST2 doesn't show orphaned packages.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551771 Summary: Orphaned Packages package group in YaST2 doesn't show orphaned packages. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cornail@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 SUSE/3.5.4-1.1.2 Firefox/3.5.4 During testing the new Orphaned Packages view in YaST Software Management, it was empty every time. E.g. installed blender, which automatically pulled yafray. After uninstalling blender, yafray remained installed but didn't show up as an orphaned package. Also installing audacity or inkscape pulled a lot of dependencies which were not showed as orphaned after uninstalling audacity and inkscape. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install blender which pulls yafray. 2.Uninstall blender. 3.Check Orphaned Packages for showing yafray. Actual Results: Empty view. Expected Results: yafray should have been shown under Orphaned Packages. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Orphanded - as the resolver understands it - is a package without any update candiadate. You may say it's 'unmaintained'.
It is NOT a leaf package in the dependency tree, a package not required by any other.
Ok, let's clarify it. I don't know how zypper internally works, but: There are packages which are explicitely installed by the user and those which are automatically installed as dependencies. This state should be stored ("manual" vs "auto"). *** As orphaned package I referred to an "auto" leaf package. A "manual" leaf would of course not be orphan. If one reads the feature request in openFATE, orphan is also used there this way (it is perhaps wrongly used but essentially it means this, if I understand it correctly). *** I am not an expert at all in this field, Debian's APT (& aptitude or apt-get autoremove) does this correctly, one should look at their solution. I say, automatically installed leaf packages should be removeable automatically. I think this is what most people want. What is your opinion? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think using 'orphan' is unfortunate and not correct here. See my comments in the FATE (and please reply there). But the main point here is that the 'auto-remove' feature is not done yet - it was marked as done by mistake.

Fully agreed. I too look forward to the feature. Sorry for the noise caused by mistakingly closing it as done! I'll leave this report closed as fixed, since you wouldn't be filing it if the feature wasn't marked as done, right? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Exactly. This bugreport is only relevant if the feature is marked as done. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
