[Bug 683419] New: No Wireless Network with Intersil Corporation ISL3890 [Prism GT/Prism Duette]
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=683419 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=683419#c0 Summary: No Wireless Network with Intersil Corporation ISL3890 [Prism GT/Prism Duette] Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: f.leerink@xs4all.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b12) Gecko/20110222 Firefox/4.0b12 Hello, I am still happily using my Medion MD41300 Notebook from june 2004. This Notebook is equipped with a 3,06GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor + Hyper Threading Technology, 1MB of memory and Intersil's Corporation ISL3890 [Prim GT / Prism Duette] [1260:3890] Network Controller [0280]. This Notebook was running openSUSE 10.3 and used the prism54 driver successfully for the wireless network interface. Unfortunately this 10.3 openSUSE release is no longer supported, so I tried the openSUSE 11.4 / KDE4 final release on it and that runs very well with wired network. The wireless network does not work after the install from DVD. For the wireless Network I found the following URL: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/p54 and tried to use the new p54pci driver in combination KNetworkmanager without success up to now. The referenced URL asks for information if for whatever reason the new p54pci cannot be used, I send you the following info. So let me point wise state what I have done/experienced sofar.: 0 Installation of the final release of openSUSE 11.4 / KDE4 went well and works fine including wired networking via KNetworkmanager. Start up less 2 minitues, sleep functionality worked out of the box, great. 1 Identify the type of Intersil/Conexant chipset you have. Using Identifying via "lspci -nn" route: MD41300-openSUSE:/home/frans # lspci -nn -----> 03:06.0 Network controller [0280]: Intersil Corporation ISL3890 [Prism GT/Prism Duette]/ISL3886 [Prism Javelin/Prism Xbow] [1260:3890] (rev 01) MD41300-openSUSE:/home/frans # 2 Identify your kernel version, this can be done via: uname -r MD41300-openSUSE:/home/frans # uname -r 2.6.37.1-1.2-default MD41300-openSUSE:/home/frans # 3 Find the correct firmware for your device According to the URL, table and the kernel version I should download and rename the firmware as required for 2.6.29 kernels and above: card type required filename recommended image PCI / PCMCIA isl3886pci download 2.13.25.0.arm I have renamed the downloaded firmware file to isl3886 and copied it into the existing /lib/firmware directory. I have unloaded the diver with command modprobe -r p54pci ??? and than reload the driver via modprobe p54pci In both cases the system accepted the commands without comment. What happens if original an other driver was loaded ?? 4 I have configured KNetworkmanager for the Wireless-Home connection with a fixed IP-address 192.168.2.156, mask 255.255.255.0 , Gateway / DNS server both 192.168.2.138 and the required wireless security data and started the Wireless-Home connection after I had disconnected the network cable. KNetworkmanager showed the Wireless-Home connection as connecting and waiting on security. But checking/confirming a number of times the security pop-up screen does not change the situation - still no connection. The output of dmesg is as follows: MD41300-openSUSE:/home/frans # dmesg ...... ....... I have 1st installed compat-wireless-scripts=2.6.38.2 and after that compat-wireless for my "default" kernel flavor with KPackageKit. After that still no wireless connection. I have hereafter shutdown and restarted the system but still no wireless connection. Afterthat I have run as root modprobe -r p54pci followed by modprobe p54pci and than the wireless connection worked after a short while. If I shutdown and restart the system again no wireless connection. Only after the 2 modprobe commands the the wireless connection is working again. After a system sleep and awake cycle the wireless connection is still working. What can I do to prevent the need for the 2 modprobe commannds after every shutdown and restart cycle of the system.? Ok, so please remove the compat-wireless drivers (rpm -e compat-wireless) and retry (after reboot) if it is sufficient to perform rmmod/modprobe even with stock 11.4 drivers. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Afterthat I have run as root modprobe -r p54pci followed by modprobe p54pci. The result is that KNetworkmanager showed the Wireless-Home connection as connecting and waiting on security. I don't know whether this is what you ask me to do in comment 8. (I didnot receive an (clarifying) answer on my comment 9) IF IT IS NOT WHAT YOU ASK ME TO DO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Sorry, I have no idea. Could you test kernel 3.0 from stable repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/ ? Step 4 I have done with yast/network devices/network settings, since there is still a problem with KNetworkmanager according to the notes I have seen. I have repeated steps 0,1,2,3 and 4 from my original problem note for openSUSE. Step 4 I have done this time with Networkmanager plasmoid. That plasmoid only showed up after a relogin after the install.(that problem is reported as a bug) The wireless network is working fine. Even the Power Management functionality works correctly together with networkmanager and KWallet. For me this item is closed / solved. We really need to document the need for following URL: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/p54 Find the correct firmware for your device According to the URL, table and the kernel version I should download and rename the firmware as required for 2.6.29 kernels and above: card type required filename recommended image PCI / PCMCIA isl3886pci download 2.13.25.0.arm I have renamed the downloaded firmware file to isl3886pci and copied it into the existing /lib/firmware directory. I have unloaded the diver with command modprobe -r p54pci and than reload the driver via modprobe p54pci. After that I could configure networkmanager as needed.
