[Bug 379495] New: nvpn does not reduce device MTU
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=379495 Summary: nvpn does not reduce device MTU Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Mobile Devices AssignedTo: zoz@novell.com ReportedBy: jw@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: behlert@novell.com, bili@novell.com Blocks: 357354 Found By: --- I am using turnpike-0.1.1-121, called from the shell: nvpn -c NUE Throughput with svn up (e.g. from https://svn.suse.de/svn/inttools) is extremly low. kinternet Data Rate logger shows only sporadic spikes. I took a few hours to trace down the issue and found, that svn.suse.de sends TCP packages which are too large. Apparently IP re-fragmentation does not work with nvpn. I can manually reduce from MTU 1500 to MTU 1400, to improve throughput. $ ifconfig modem0 mtu 1400 $ svn up Now kinternet Data Rate window shows me full bandwidth. NetworkManager-novellvpn-gnome has this changelog entry: * Tue Apr 18 2006 - rvinay@novell.com - Calculation of MTU before sending to NetworkManager perhaps, nvpn could do something similar? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, my modem0 is bluetooth /dev/rfcomm0 . This is a dialup connection through a mobile phone.
Before starting nvpn, $ ifconfig modem0 tells me 'mtu 1500' for the device.
Hi, Juergen. It's a little weird, I don't know why it set to 1396 after vpn connection, we set the mtu after vpn connection use: ip route get $GWADDR GWADDR is my vpn's gateway. $ ping vpn.bej.novell.com PING vpn.bej.novell.com (61.14.130.209) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from ip-61-14-130-209.asianetcom.net (61.14.130.209): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.570 ms 64 bytes from ip-61-14-130-209.asianetcom.net (61.14.130.209): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.432 ms $ ip route get 61.14.130.209 61.14.130.209 via 147.2.207.254 dev eth0 src 147.2.207.57 cache mtu 1500 advmss 1460 hoplimit 64 Would mind try these again before vpn connection? Thanks! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
