[Bug 858405] New: The release notes for 13.1 do not say that XFCE now does not support bluetooth at all.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=858405 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=858405#c0 Summary: The release notes for 13.1 do not say that XFCE now does not support bluetooth at all. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Release Notes AssignedTo: ke@suse.com ReportedBy: carlos.e.r@opensuse.org QAContact: coolo@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- The release notes talk about KDE not having a bluetooth stack, but they keep silent about XFCE, which doesn't have one at all, and now has disabled the feature of using the gnome bluetooth stack. This worked in 12.3, not in 13.1, so it is an important misfeature, and it is not mentioned in the release notes blueetooth section. The release notes should also say how to use bluetooth in text mode (or point to a link explaining it), which seems the only viable alternative left to us. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The situation is that for 12.1 and 12.2 the Xfce pattern included gnome-bluetooth, mostly for convenience because it could be used with Xfce. It was removed again in 12.3 because of excessive dependencies on GNOME components. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As simple as that. The reasons can be explained or not. 12.3 XFCE did have bluetooth functionality. Not its own, heavy, came from gnome, but it worked if you installed it. As on 13.1 this does not work, this is a new state of things. I have been unable to locate an alternative, desktop independent, even text mode. I was caught unawares when I upgraded my laptop, no idea this was the case. In my laptop, I have to reboot to Windows to use bt. The note could be as simple as this: ... XFCE can no longer use the gnome bluetooth stack, thus there is no bluetooth functionality since 13.1. There is no known alternative yet. ... If the above is not true, well, I opened bugzillas and queries on each subject. If it is possible to make it work, anyone can say so and explain. I do not know if XFCE has development efforts to create its own functionality or not. If they exist, that info should be added to the note. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, there is no way for xfce users to solve this on their own, that's false. There is no solution at all but to go back to gnome instead. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There is no Xfce or DE-independent effort of creating a Bluez-based GUI that I'm aware of, and certainly nothing packaged in openSUSE. You can still do everything from the commandline though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So I thought.

No, impossible. I have been trying for days, with help from others in the mail list, and it is impossible. There is blueman, but this requires installing the deprecated 'hal' from the kde3 repo. I have tried without that and it is incapable of working. I have tried several tools from the bluez toolkit, and it has been impossible, or nobody knows how. The package contains no documentation or howto, the FAQ on their home page is just vestigial, empty of content. If you know of a commandline utility (set) that allows pairing and transferring of files, and how to do it, please contribute to that mail list thread. Nobody has pointed us yet to a webpage that explains how to do these things. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Blueman is a long dead project and doesn't work with Bluez5.

Pairing can be done with bluetoothctl which is part of the bluez package and file transfer e.g. via obexftp or obexfs. While bluetoothctl lacks some official documentation its use was even discussed in the Bluez 5 thread on the mailing list: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2013-10/msg00061.html I mean that's basic stuff you can find out with a simple google search. To get back on topic, if you want something in the release notes I suggest you post a draft here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
