1) 001a0000 is not a valid pfn, and therefore doesn't have guaranteed pfn_to_page()? But we have passed the pfn_valid(pfn) test, unless the test is insufficient.
I was wrong, the code where this happened is not yet pfn_to_page(pfn), but the very pfn_valid(pfn) check. It just uses almost the same structures and functions. Furthermore, pfn 001a0000 is (according to the provided zoneinfo), one page past the end of the Normal zone. This is where the compaction free scanner initializes, and normally, either pfn_valid() would be false, or it would be a beginning of a different, zone, so the page_zone() == zone check would fail and the free scanner would advance to the previous pageblock. So the fact that pfn_valid crashes is bad. Looks like physnode_map returns bogus node id here, since either it should return 0 (the only node, which I believe has its node_data correctly initialized ortherwise this system would crash much sooner), or -1 which would make it jump away on the js instruction at c031c4f0. With pfn (001a0000 - 1) the offset in physnode_map would be 103, while here it's 104. So I'm guessing some off-by-one error during physnode_map initialization. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you please attach output of dmesg from the system?
The system got naturally rebooted in the meantime but here it is in multiple parts due to limitations in bugzilla.
Rebooting is OK, I was interested in the memory initialization messages. And seems they indeed explain a lot...

So, in fact this is a NUMA machine with two machines. But for some reason, node 1 could not get its NODE_DATA allocated so it acts as a single node machine, as your zoneinfo has shown.

Despite NODE_DATA not being allocated for node 1, physnode_map was filled for zone 1. As a side note, it is questionable why anyone would want to run a 32bit kernel on a NUMA machine with 12GB RAM. 64bit kernel would make much more sense. I'm guessing not a lot of people run 32bit on systems like this, which is why this hasn't been reported sooner. Besides that, there are clearly two problems here: 1) physnode_map should not have been filled for node 1 - it's the direct cause of this bug. 2) why wasn't NODE_DATA for node 1 allocated? Losing access to 6GB of memory because 8192 bytes could not be allocated is not exactly the best tradeoff I can imagine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Besides that, there are clearly two problems here:

Could you please test the desktop kernel from here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/vbabka/openSUSE_13.1/i686/ - post dmesg after booting (the first part that fits in bugzilla is enough, or better use an attachment) - trigger compaction by doing as root: echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/compact_memory it shouldn't crash anymore
2) why wasn't NODE_DATA for node 1 allocated? Losing access to 6GB of memory because 8192 bytes could not be allocated is not exactly the best tradeoff I can imagine.
I found an upstream commit that should fix this and I will backport it to opensuse kernel. But it also does not guarantee that node data will be allocated, so fix for 1) should still be tested and then I will send it upstream. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, I installed this kernel on the affected workstation.
- post dmesg after booting (the first part that fits in bugzilla is enough, or better use an attachment)
See provided attachment https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=594631
- trigger compaction by doing as root: echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/compact_memory it shouldn't crash anymore
Thanks for providing means for triggering the issue. I positively verified that it triggers the bug with the kernel 3.11.10-61.g04896c2-desktop. On the other hand I cannot reproduce/trigger the bug with the provided kernel3.11.10-3-desktop anymore. (Even though I am of course not using the BIOS option "Enable Memory Interleaving" as mentioned below.) So this looks really good.
2) why wasn't NODE_DATA for node 1 allocated? Losing access to 6GB of memory because 8192 bytes could not be allocated is not exactly the best tradeoff I can imagine.

I addition I found an option in the BIOS CMOS Setup on the affected machine about "Enable Memory Interleaving". With this option all 12 GB become visible and usable. In addition the bug cannot be triggered anymore. Sorry for the delays. Due to local reasons I needed access to the machine in question and had to create a new installation using kiwi etc.
I disabled the "memory Interleaving" BIOS feature again.
Booting the old kernel --> 6 GB available, reproducable crash
Booting 3.11.10-5.1 --> 12 GB available as expected - good job!
echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/compact_memory with 3.11.10-5.1 - no crash anymore - good!
See also output from dmesg with 3.11.10-5.1 in attachment.
Thanks for the testing!
When shall I expect the patches in the OpenSuSE git kernels?
You mean here? http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/openSUSE-13.1/standard/i68... The current version 3.11.10-71.1.gfba7c1f should already have the fix included, so you should have 12 GB available and no crashes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Anyway, I would strongly discourage you from using 32b which 12G of RAM. Running 32b userspace on top of 64b works without any issues and it is much more optimal performance wise. There are even more reasons to switch as the machine seems to be a NUMA HW.
Yes, I fully agree and I am fully aware of this. Unfortunately there is a special reason to be forced to use a 32bit Kernel in this special case :-(( (It is due to the need to run broken proprietary 3rd party 32-bit only kernel modules on top of this machine. For details why this needs to be this way please ask National Instruments. I asked them numerous times in the last years with no success.)
