[Bug 541252] New: USB devices vanish
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=541252 Summary: USB devices vanish Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 7 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bwhiteley@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I plugged in a USB stick with the intent to repartition and format it. It was automatically mounted, and nautilus launched revealing the contents of the USB stick. I unmounted the device in Nautilus. Then I checked dmesg. It revealed that the device was sdb. However, /dev/sdb is now gone, after unmounting the device. How am I supposed to fdisk and format the device? Is this behavior intentional? I've found a workaround: Unmount from the command line, instead of Nautilus. Then the devices don't vanish. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is a GNOME issue. It's both unmounting *and* ejecting the device. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think the user story is to use gnome-disk-utility to format the USB device. I doubt upstream will accept a "unmount-only" option for usb devices, and we won't diverge there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
