Things are looking promising, the driver works 100% with the latest Tumbleweed Kde live image, the mc bug has caught up with Leap:15.5 so there's no reason not to upgrade to Tumbleweed again. Busy with a big project atm and the laptop is my oscilloscope and logic analyzer so I'll upgrade in a weeks time and maybe we can close this bug. The fix more than likely came from a windows hp bios update a few months ago.

That guess about the fix is quite likely the correct one. Coding for a BIOS is apparently too hard for the current crop of software people at many vendors.
