[Bug 394323] New: Gnome Workspace Switcher Intermittent Failure
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=394323 Summary: Gnome Workspace Switcher Intermittent Failure Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 3 Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: markgray+to-suse@puck.nac.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer This is an odd one. I have added a second panel to the top of my screen and put a 12 workspace Workspace Switcher (and other things) in it. Every time I boot the computer, the workspace switcher has only 4 workspaces and is totally non-functional -- ie. clicking a different workspace has no effect whatsoever. Logging out and logging back in replaces that broken 4 workspace Workspace Switcher with a fully functional 12 workspace Workspace Switcher. Which log files, and configuration files you will find helpful are not immediately apparent to me, but I will poke around on my own today and tommorrow in hopes of figuring out what is actually happening, and add attachments which seem important. (Assuming you don't get to me before then.) It has been years since I last used Gnome, and I am truly amazed at how good it has gotten in the meantime: good work people. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In addition, examining the differences between the Xorg.0.log files shows that on a broken Workspace Switcher, DRM has failed to start working before Gnome and metacity are up and running. Examining the differences between the .xsession-errors shows that metacity exits because it "thinks" another window manager is already running. I am attaching these files and the output of hwinfo --all for your perusal. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I noticed something else -- when DRM fails to come up in time, and the Workspace Switcher fails to work -- metacity has exited because compiz has decided to start instead???? 3D is far too slow on this machine to even consider running compiz so I removed compiz (and everything that depends on it), and now gnome, metacity and the Workspace Switcher work perfectly every time whether DRM is up and running already or not. So I guess this bug comes down to: why does compiz decide to run, and why does it interfere with the running of the Workspace Switcher. I leave it to you guys to decide what to do about this bug, whether it be gdm, compiz, gnome, X, or DRI related. I will be happy to provide any info which might resolve this problem. (I won't even be upset if you decide to close it as WONTFIX -- I am already happy with gnome on 11.0 -- just want to help make the release as perfect as possible.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Since Compiz defaults to a 4 side cube, that would explain why it went back to 4 in the workspace switcher. It also fixes the handling of OpenType/CFF fonts with embedded bitmaps, which will no longer be mistaken for bitmap fonts. - fonttosfnt 1.0.4 * This version fixes a crash on architectures that have an 'interesting' implementation of va_list, such as AMD64. It also <end quote> The other problem (that DRM does not come up the first time X starts) is not important to me, so feel free to close this bug. However, if you do want to fix _that_, I will be very happy to do whatever I can to help. The situation with this laptop is slightly odd in that the internal monitor is 1440x1050@60Hz, but the 19" external monitor DDC says that _its_ best resolution is 1280x1024@85Hz (although it is capable of doing 1600x1400@60Hz). With 10.2 I hand modified the xorg.conf to do 1440x1050@60Hz (because Sax won't allow me to select it), but for 11.0 I have decided to go with the 1280x1024@85Hz since it looks so much sharper.
