I use the default X.org server. Output of Xorg -version: This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation. It is not supported in any way. Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/. Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release. Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository. See http://wiki.x.org/wiki/GitPage for git access instructions. X Window System Version 7.1.99.902 (7.2.0 RC 2) Release Date: 13 November 2006 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.99.902 Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX Current Operating System: Linux dhcppc0 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006 x86_64 Build Date: 09 January 2007 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Module Loader present I use the NVidia driver from NVidia, version 1.0-9746. I have set the options: nvidia-xconfig --composite nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite nvidia-xconfig --render-accel nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals When the X server fails to start, the last line in /var/log/Xorg.0.log is FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled" recount is 2, should be 1; fixing. This line is not present, if the X server started. However, if the X server failed, init 3 and init 5 again always brings up the server. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

IMHO the font path warning can be ignored ("could not open font fixed" would be fatal instead!). Maybe something breaks again and again your fonts.dir in /usr/share/fonts/misc? Fix it by using mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/misc Are you sure you attached the logfile after the Xserver did not start? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241478 harbrink@bluewin.ch changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW Info Provider|harbrink@bluewin.ch | ------- Comment #5 from harbrink@bluewin.ch 2007-02-02 09:44 MST ------- Yes. The only difference in the logfile is this last line. It doesn't appear, if the X server starts. But this doesn't mean that the font path is the cause. Perhaps there is a different cause but only when the X server fails, the error with the font path occurs. In /var/log/messages there is a message from kdm, when the X server fails: Feb 2 13:14:55 dhcppc0 kdm[3570]: X server startup timeout, terminating This message is also displayed in the console on <crtl>+<alt>+F10. Perhaps there is a strange timeout (I suspect the acquiring of DHCP data from the router) and there is a timeout set so close that it sometimes fails. But I can't say what is the cause, because the failing occurs irregularly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Anyway, this is something which it seems cannot be investigated. I suggest to switch to the nv driver and if this issue no longer occurs with the nv driver I can reassign this one to NVIDIA for investigation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Even if the error doesn't occur with the nv driver, we can't be sure if it's really dependent on the driver, of if just the error condition wasn't met. I will try to figure out what triggers the error. If I am able to isolate the error condition, I will open a new bug. So it seems, whatever the error was, it is fixed in Xorg 7.2 final. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
