[Bug 556097] New: Unable to configure Scanner (Epson Perfection V350)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556097#c0 Summary: Unable to configure Scanner (Epson Perfection V350) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lenz@grimmer.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=327893) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=327893) iscan.spec dummy spec file to fool YaST2 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 SUSE/3.5.4-1.1.2 Firefox/3.5.4 I have an Epson Perfection V350 Photo scanner (attached via USB) that I would like to configure using the YaST2 scanner module. Starting the scanner configuration dialogue properly lists the device and states "Not Configured" for the driver field. I then click "Add" to add configure it and select the V350 from the list. Clicking "Next" returns the following error: "The package iscan should be installed but it only contains proprietary binary-only i386-only software. Therefore it is only available for i386-compatible architectures. Some scanners are also supported by another driver. If you really want to install iscan, you must do it manually." Confirming this error message with OK reveals another popup: "Required Package Not Installed - The driver epkowa requires the package iscan." Clicking "OK" on this one reveals yet another popup: "Error - Failed to activate epkowa." At this point the driver setup is aborted and I can click "Finish" to get beck to the initial Scanner configuration screen. OK, so I try to install the apparently missing "iscan" package using the Software Management module. Searching for "iscan" reveals three available packages: "iscan-firmware", "iscan-free" and "iscan-proprietary-drivers". There is no package named "iscan" (without any extension). "iscan-firmware" and "iscan-free" are marked as installed. I select "iscan-proprietary-drivers" to be installed and receive a warning that it conflicts with "iscan-free". Fair enough, I choose to deinstall iscan-free instead and try again. Now the installation succeeds and I end up with having "iscan-firmware" and "iscan-proprieatary-drivers" installed on my system. I get back to the YaST2 scanner configuration, wait for the scanner database configuration to finish and click "Add" again. I select my model again and click "Next". Again, the error message about having to install the iscan package manually appears. I confirm and receive that other popup about package iscan not being installed. The configuration gets aborted and I again end up with an unconfigured scanner. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Attach an Epson Perfection V350 Scanner 2. Try to configure it using the YaST2 Scanner module 3. Realize it's impossible Actual Results: The Scanner is not configured and remains unusable. Expected Results: The Scanner is properly configured and ready to use. I was able to overcome the complaint about the missing iscan package by installing a dummy RPM named "iscan". The spec file is attached. However, the configuration still fails as YaST2 attempts to configure it using the (not installed) epkowa driver. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556097#c1 Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Component|YaST2 |Patterns CC| |jsmeix@novell.com AssignedTo|bnc-team-screening@forge.pr |coolo@novell.com |ovo.novell.com | QAContact|jsrain@novell.com |qa@suse.de --- Comment #1 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2009-11-17 15:45:39 UTC --- This is no bug in the YaST scanner module but the root cause is that there is no package named "iscan" (without any extension) available. I have no idea why this one is not available to be installed but "iscan-firmware" and "iscan-proprietary-drivers" are because in particular the latter contains also proprietary stuff. I change the bug component to "Patterns" - hopefully this is the right one in this case. Somehow you must get and install "iscan" (without any extension) together with the matching versions of "iscan-firmware" and "iscan-proprietary-drivers". Note that because of https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=425743#c2 our IScan version is a bit outdated so that you may like to use the newest available version from Avasys, see http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/news/id000736.php When your scanner requires a proprietary module, you may have to download and install two packages from Avasys, one for the base software and another one with the proprietary module. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556097#c4 --- Comment #4 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2009-11-18 09:01:40 UTC --- For me it also looks strange because I did not expect any of those proprietary stuff to be in openSUSE. I would have expected that neither "iscan-firmware" nor "iscan-proprietary-drivers" nor "iscan" is available for openSUSE (except you had added manually whatever non-official package repository which might provide whatever non-official packags). Perhaps this is whatever unexpected side-effect of the change to build openSUSE in the openSUSE build service because - as far as I know - it is practically impossible to find out which projects in the openSUSE build service may contain which packages, i.e. something like osc where_sources iscan (but I am not a "osc" expert to know all its functions). When I log in at the openSUSE build service and go to https://build.opensuse.org/project/list_my it shows a list of my "Involved Packages" where only "iscan-free" is listed (for the build service projects openSUSE:11.2 openSUSE:11.1 openSUSE:11.0) but nothing like "iscan" or "iscan-proprietary-drivers" or "iscan-firmware" which is perfectly correct because I do not maintain any of those proprietary packages in the openSUSE build service. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
