[Bug 442566] New: Alsa sound device is busy
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=442566 Summary: Alsa sound device is busy Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: muteph@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User Hello, I am having issues with alsa and sound since the installation of 11.0, applications will claim that "Audio output unavailable; the device is busy." For example embedded flash applications won't have sound at all sometimes, or while listening to music in Amarok, once I manually select a different track the application will claim that the device is busy, Wine applications also suddenly lose sound after a variable time that can be a few minutes, hours or even be all ok for days, all I do every time to get sound back to work is "service alsasound restart" and the sound is back but again, as different applications that access the sound system, the same problem come back so that alsasound would have to be restarted. Here is my alsa info: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=2493b0c69cd1f00a05372708af2bd2dbce34a0c2 I have verified that under alsamixer: IEC958 I ---> Set to ---> IEC958 P and this fixed the issue one time then after reboot it haven't work at all: alsactl -f /etc/asound.conf store. I have try to get help trough different #irc channels but so far the issue remain unsolved. Looks like, however, that running applications with wine that use sound is what trigger the issue, I will investigate that and report as soon I have the information. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do I understand correctly that "alsactl restore" doesn't help after reboot? It's a bit unclear what you're trying. Please clarify - which outputs you're listening to; analog, digital, whatever - which sound subsystem; pulseaudio, alsa-lib dmix, etc - the configuration of wine audio; which PCM to use BTW, on 11.0, there is a known problem when you use libflashsupport and dmix. If you are running 11.0 KDE system, libflashsupport is unnecessary and harmful. Try to remove it. Anyway, it'd be helpful if you can have an alsa-info.sh output for both working and non-working states. Please generate files via --no-upload option, and upload to here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you elaborate the procedure you do below?

DATA: Thank you, well I've been working without running any wine applications during this days but the issue persist, actually I just installed VMware and VMs can't connect because DSP is busy. in all my applications I am just using 'default' as alsa device. Skype settings: http://picpaste.com/skypemixer103572985619.jpeg winecfg settings: http://picpaste.com/winecfg190246985698125.jpeg What I meant about IEC958? People in #alsa in Freenode told me to set the IEC958 to IEC958 P, the other possible options are: - Analog I - PCM - IEC958 I Here is the snapshot: http://picpaste.com/alsamixer1487164816.jpeg Here is the link for my alsa info: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=2493b0c69cd1f00a05372708af2bd2dbce34a0c2 Sadly I would not be able to upload a working state unless I reinstall the OS =\ wich is something I can't do atm, FURTHER TROUBLESHOOTING: Now, I was going to upload a snapshot of the SMplyer configuration, since the volume bar was moving the Master volume instead of PCM as supposed, but I tried the "use software volume control" Could it be that the rest of the applications are trying to access the device directly? I had libflashsupport-000-67.1 installed, just removed it ty, currently installed: flash-player-9.0.151.0-0.1 flash-plugin-9.0.124.0-release VMware would claim that DSP is busy and still I have sound in my VM o.O Amarok would, sometimes, be unable to open the audio output if I manually switch to the next song, and sometimes when I pause Amarok the master volume mute... but the weird part is that this doesn't always happen. Here you can see my Amarok and KDE audio settings (I am using Xine Backend since the gstreamer wouldn't work): http://picpaste.com/amarok-n-kde-sound93569234562.jpeg And here a list of the relevant audio related packages I have installed: alsa-tools-gui-1.0.16-47.1 kalsatools-1.5.0-544.1 alsamodular-1.8.7-3.5 alsa-devel-1.0.16-39.1 alsa-plugins-jack-1.0.16-57.1 FA_clalsadrv-1.2.2-0.pm.3 alsa-plugins-samplerate-1.0.16-57.1 alsa-1.0.16-39.1 alsa-oss-1.0.15-48.1 alsamixergui-0.9.0rc1-705.1 alsa-firmware-1.0.16-24.1 alsa-plugins-maemo-1.0.16-57.1 alsa-tools-1.0.16-47.1 alsa-plugins-1.0.16-57.1 java-1_6_0-sun-alsa-1.6.0.u7-1.1 alsa-utils-1.0.16-35.1 phonon-backend-xine-4.1.3-59.5 ifntphon-1.2.1-369.1 libphonon4-4.2.0-53.1 phonon-backend-gstreamer-0_10-4.2.0-53.1 phonon-devel-4.2.0-53.1 phonon-4.2.0-53.1 arts-1.5.9-33.1 libxine1-arts-1.1.15-44.pm.0 arts-devel-1.5.9-33.1 kdemultimedia3-arts-3.5.9-44.pm.1 kdelibs3-arts-3.5.9-49.1 I don't know what more information I could submit... I just wonder because of the issue with SMplayer if the some application is not taking exclusive control over the mixer and all the apps should be forced to use software mixer instead, in that case how do we keep applications from taking exclusivity over alsa? Might it be Phonon? But at this point I am merely guessing.
