[Bug 228707] New: Problem with RAID partitioning on HP Smart Array E200 controller on openSUSE 10.2 final x86_64
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228707 Summary: Problem with RAID partitioning on HP Smart Array E200 controller on openSUSE 10.2 final x86_64 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dengel@vud.sk QAContact: qa@suse.de HW: HP ProLiant 320 G4, HP Smart Array E200 controller with 2x80 GB SATA HDD, mirrored in RAID1 mode. Attempt 1: Good working openSUSE 10.1 in the box. After boot from distribution dvd openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-x86_64.iso ends my attempt for system update with message: System update is impossible for system incompatibility. (10.1 -> 10.2 both x86_64 and incompatibility?) Attempt 2: In the box is still running openSUSE 10.1 with classical Linux partitioning schema on RAID: "swap", "/" and "/home". After booting from openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-x86_64.iso I choose "New installation" with idea reformat existing partitioning schema. But after activating of the partitioning section in the setup dialog appears message: "The partitioning on disk /dev/cciss/c0d0 is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table. You can use the partitions on disk /dev/cciss/c0d0 as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool." The "expert" partitioning option shows in the table only one line: /dev/cciss/c0d0 - 74.4 GB - CCISS disk 0/0 Every attempt to add new partition ends with previously mentioned message. After booting from 10.1 dvd is the partitioning schema correct and editable. Attempt 3: Using SmartArray bios I had delete existing RAID1 and then I create new RAID1 device with the same parameters, but this time of course raw. After booting from openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-x86_64.iso it was possible in the expert partitioning dialog correct create and edit new RAID partitioning. Also the whole 10.2 setup procedure was correct. After reboot of the installed system from RAID all seems to be ok. Activation of the yast partitioner leeds to the same error message from the Attempt 2. But invoking parted from command line shows correct results: # parted /dev/cciss/c0d0 print Disk /dev/cciss/c0d0: 80.0GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: msdos Number Start End Size Type File system Flags 1 32.3kB 4302MB 4302MB primary linux-swap , , , , , , , , , type=82, , 2 4302MB 80.0GB 75.7GB primary ext3 boot, , , , , , , , , type=83, , It seems to be a YAST error. This controller uses the cciss driver, the device files are: /dev/cciss/c0d0 (this is the first (logical) disc) /dev/cciss/c0d0p1 (parition 1) . and so on. According to y2log, despite the error message, parted can read the partition table, but yast2 is unable to use it, because it expects the partitions as /dev/cciss/1, /dev/cciss/2, and so on. Relevant y2log lines: [libstorage] Storage.cc(getContainers):3923 co:Type:DISK Name:cciss/ Device:/dev/cciss/c0d0 Vcnt:0 readonly I think the disk name should be cciss/c0d0 here. I think this is not true (or this is not my case) because after booting from 10.1 distribution DVD is the partition table correct readable and editable from yast2. => Yast2 in the 10.1 distribution is ok. I supply – it takes not only the yast2 partitioner, also yast2 “system settings” and “boot loader configuration” are affected by this error and are not functional using HP Smart Array controller with cciss driver. Corresponding functions using command line utilities works ok. I agree with Marton’s conclusion. OpenSuSE 10.2 is installable on cciss partitions, but only after immediate RAID’s initialization using Smart Array bios. It is too hard requirement, which is only rarely applicable. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228707 ------- Comment #13 from Axel.Beckmann@t-online.de 2007-01-08 13:56 MST ------- This is what I wrote to Thomas Fehr today:
thank you for the quick attention to our problem.
You wrote in bugzilla: "Basically this is a duplicate of bug 219496. Unfortunately I cannot do much of course the problem is fixed meanwhile in current code base but this does not change you installation media. As far as I can see, there is no really reliable way to use SL 10.2 on a disk attached to the Compaq cciss controller. "
And you marked it as RESOLVED.
Unfortunately, this is totally unacceptable. For me (and about 10 customers > who all use Compaq/HP hardware and want to upgrade) the bug isn't resolved.
At least you should provide us with a time frame.
Couldn't you just mail us the repaired files and tell us where to integrate them into the DVD? I burnt it onto a rewritable DVD, so it should be possible to change it.
Failing that, I'm perfectly willing to load new DVD image with corrected code. This shouldn't be too much work to provide.
And this is part of his reply:
It is <resolved> for me, resolved means it is resolved in current development code base.
To my knowledge there will be no SL 10.2 supporting Compaq cciss controllers.
I would advise to add your demands to the bug report so I can reassign the bug to someone who can answer to your damands.
Which I do hereby. Comments, anyone? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I think we can live without official support for our hardware, but a workaround to install 10.2 would be very important. I believe the bug is in yast2-storage-lib, and Thomas told us that the fix can be easily created, so releasing an unofficial, fixed yast2-storage-lib rpm would not be too much work. If we install openSuSE from a local network share, and not from an official CD/DVD or HTTP/FTP mirror, we have a chance to tamper with the installer ramdisk image. (boot/i586/root) We can decompress the ramdisk image, replace the broken liby2storage.so, and create a fixed ramdisk image. Now the installer will load the fixed ramdisk, and everything will work fine :). That's my theory, but will it work? For whatever it is worth I attached fixed version of liby2storage.so.2.0.0
for architectures i586 and x86_64.
The install system is on DVD1 in boot/{i386,x86_64}/root.
Both of these are cramfs images.
The i586 version needs to go to /usr/lib/liby2storage.so.2.0.0 of
boot/i386/root
The x86_64 version needs to go to /usr/lib64/liby2storage.so.2.0.0 of
boot/x86_64/root
If you are in the inst-sys you can e.g. use
mount --bind
