[Bug 430490] New: several Gtk/GNOME-specific package names are misleading
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=430490 Summary: several Gtk/GNOME-specific package names are misleading Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Patterns AssignedTo: coolo@novell.com ReportedBy: bruce.lilly@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User Background: most gnome-specific packages are named with "gnome" somewhere in the package name. Likewise, kde-specific packages usually have "kde" in the package name. Some desktop-independent X packages simply begin with "x" (e.g. xosd). However, a number of Gtk-specific and/or GNOME-specific packages are misleadingly named beginning with "x" and with no "gnome" or "gtk" tag. [there are also non-windowing applications beginning with "x", but that's a more general package naming issue.] It appears that qt and KDE developers have been more cautious; I do not see any "x" packages in openSuSE 11.0 that are qt- or KDE-specific. In many cases, the summary (e.g. "for X11") and/or description (e.g. "for the X Window System") of the affected packages are misleading as well. These discrepancies make searching for packages that include or exclude certain components somewhat difficult. The following packages are examples (also -debug, -debugsource, and -devel, etc. where applicable): x264 xarchiver xarchon xchat xdiff-ext xfmedia xgnokii xine-extra xine-lib xlogmaster xmorph xournal xscreensaver xsidplay xzgv I suggest renaming these with a "gtk-" or "gnome-" prefix. Summaries and descriptions should reference "X11" only if there are no dependencies on gtk/gtk+ or qt. Dependencies beyond the core X libraries should be indicated as "gtk", "qt", "GNOME", "KDE" etc. according to the highest level dependency of the package. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
