[Bug 299244] New: framebuffer looks broken when using ati fglrx driver
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=299244 Summary: framebuffer looks broken when using ati fglrx driver Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: cstender@novell.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: --- When using the ati fglrx driver, the framebuffer looks broken on my Thinkpad T60 (2007-VCE, ATI X1400). It looks like the framebuffer switches between two monitor resolutions all the time. I attached a video which show this behaviour. I saw this also on two other T60 machines. This only happens if I install the fglrx driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

-----Original Message----- From: Rahman, Hasan Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 4:48 PM To: Marsan, Luugi Subject: Bug 299244 - Framebuffer looks broken when using ati fglrx driver
Hello,
I have attempted to reproduce this issue on my test system. Details of my system setup are:
Mainboad: RD580/SB600 ASIC: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (M54) Distro: OpenSuSE10.3 Driver: 8.443.1
Using VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k (vga=791) with the fglrx driver installed, the defect could not be reproduced thus far. I used the kernel option vga=791 in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to enable a graphic console.
After viewing the video of the defect, I was curious as to why there was flickering across the whole video. In other words, the space beside the screen (the background) was also flickering.
Also, I would like to know exact kernel options being used by the bug-logger. That is, what configurations does he have on his system? I would suggest him to set vga=normal in the /boot/grub/menu.lst and check whether the problem still exists. If not, then we can would be closer to assuming that it is specific to framebuffer consoles. If possible, trying the latest catalyst release of the fglrx driver is also recommended.
Regards, Hasan

Created an attachment (id=156796) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=156796) [details] Video which shows the broken framebuffer Unfortunately the video is not really helpful, since the whole video is flickering. :-)
ATI could not reproduce the issue on their M56 laptop with 1400x1050 native resolution. The engineer told us that the vga mode for the kernel framebuffer was invalid on his machine. The mode number for 1400x1050@16bpp depends on the BIOS, it could be figured out e.g. with hwinfo --framebuffer -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This issue has been fixed for the upcoming Catalyst 8.5 driver to be released in May 2008.
ACK: frame buffer consoles are usable again -- finally... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
