[Bug 504590] New: Essential Yast Printing Configuration Cannot Download Dependant Library File libpurple-2.5.1-3.6.x86_64.rpm
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=504590 Summary: Essential Yast Printing Configuration Cannot Download Dependant Library File libpurple-2.5.1-3.6.x86_64.rpm Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042700 SUSE/3.0.10-1.1.1 Firefox/3.0.10 Every time I try to permit online update of patch libpurple-2.5.1-3.6.x86_64.rpm to facilitate use of Yast Printing Tool, the file never ever downloads completely with the same error type. I have continued to try an download this file over 6 weeks now, and as I do not have any issue with ANY other update or patch, I can only assume that this file is corrupt on the server. This would account for the error in downloading via HTTP. I do not believe after 6 weeks of re-trying to download this update patch, and with no issue in many of the other hundreds of files that download without issue; that the error is at my end. Could the SysAdmin please verify the integrity of this file as it exists on the update server http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/ Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Type to download via HTTP the above single .RPM File 2. 3. Actual Results: See attached error response - this error is repeated every time I try to download and install this update patch and has compromised my ability to change anything in my Yast>Hardware>Printer configuration - It has actually completely stuffed up my printer configuration as other update files have all been download and installed without error. Without this error my total Yast>Hardware>Printer configuration remains corrupted and inaccessible. Expected Results: The .RPM Patch update should download without error and install. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As far as I see libpurple is even not needed by any other YaST stuff. The popups in attachment #292632 and attachment #292633 do not belong to yast2-printer but to another YaST module (I guess the package installation stuff in YaST). Perhaps the root cause is not at all in YaST? We need a strategy for dealing with this type of update error and I suppose we have three different ways to manage it. 1. Change the corrupted file on the master so that when all the mirrors replicate the new file is taken up. 2. If we can determine the mirror by geography, which is not too hard in my case, offer directions to the mirrors to manually check the files validity. a. If the Mirror is running an NTFS Partitioned server the command to run check disk AGAINST the file will work - This is a 25 Year old external command but it will still work - Its just that NO NTFS admin will re-call it. chkdsk \absolute_ path_excluding_drive_letter\offending_file_name.extension Response will be 'The file...name.... Is contiguous' if all is o.k OR 'The file contains...n..x..errors' if its not o.k Solution: Manually copy and verify and copy directory above if empty from new source to destination copy ...absolute path..file.name ..destination /V /E As far as I know NTFS does not perform any hotfix for files so copied..big issue. If its a Novell Server we can Purge the file's salvageable records ncopy \absolute...path....\origin\ new destination /V /E Solution: Manually copy and verify and copy directory above if empty from new source to destination Personally I like option 1 above ....??????? I am sure you internal discussions are more appropriate. The ability to ensure that each mirror replicates perfectly with every file is huge and not really preventable. What I think needs to change is that during the presence of any online update that fails to download and install any file we 1. Log the actual mirror in Yast Logs 2. After x retries of an unsuccessful update, we temporarily divert the mirror to opensuse.de. If the opensuse update server can re-direct behind the scenes it surely can divert back to itself or any other with the same transparency. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

At this point in time - I will close this bug. I am sure you internal discussions are more appropriate. The ability to ensure that each mirror replicates perfectly with every file is huge and not really preventable.
Indeed, 11.2 intends to deal with these kind of issues much better. See http://en.opensuse.org/Libzypp/Failover
What I think needs to change is that during the presence of any online update that fails to download and install any file we
1. Log the actual mirror in Yast Logs
Yes, that's the biggest problem in fixing the errors that happen. Therefore, I opened this feature request: https://features.opensuse.org/305320 It is important to find and fix these errors to keep our mirror ecosystem healthy.
2. After x retries of an unsuccessful update, we temporarily divert the mirror to opensuse.de. If the opensuse update server can re-direct behind the scenes it surely can divert back to itself or any other with the same transparency.
Future downloads will happen via metalinks, which includes (in our case) content integrity verification already during transport, and transparent fallback to retrieve content from whatever mirror is available, which should always yield a "good" download. See the first URL I pasted above for more information. Thank you very much for the suggestions. And let me apologize that the error handling wasn't so good so far. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I checked the file on all mirrors, and the Australian mirrors indeed deliver the file correctly. To debug further, we'd need to know which mirror is used and see what goes wrong when you download from it. Chances it is going to happen as sure as hard disk do fail. Perhaps we need to start to record the actual mirror that was used behind the scenes in log files. I you would have just tried to attach the titled file it would have failed - That I requested so. It is corrupt as source - good knows what other corruptions exist when you had to split the Novell Forge Server into two server. Thitle file and its associated language library file dependant on security update are all corrupt at source. Even If I force my Net to accept the security update that is suppose to prevent 'MSN Messenger Signature invasions', every IDS in the work will reject it as the file itself shuts down currently hold the same violations and it is is corrupted from source. If you had attempted to attach the title file you would have failed due CRC miss-check in the copy file to upload to this bug report. 1. First fix libpurple, second fix its associated lang module and lastly fix the security update file that it suppose to prevent MSN Messanger vulnerability as it too is corrupt at source. Over the last six months I have been directly working with HP to provide not only HP Universal, but to work closely so that have assumed total control of HPLIP, offered a new version of each and every Linux release and offered a download of HPLIP for distro Version specific version. HPLIP now works so wonderfully well with ALL the produces its the most easy to setup-and discover any HP device and make it function correctly without the nee to under into Yast. It is in my opinion far superior as the sole complete remedy for printing to ANY HP device via any Network type OpenSuse or SLED. I know you all laughed at my email correspondence with James Herd, or is it Michael at HP, but 1 very small Australian who told him his HPLIP program was rubbished 1 years ago has got it fixed and perfected beyond belief -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You write very confusing comments. And in one moment you close the report, next moment you reopen it, you reassign it to different people with strange comments. I'll close this bug again as fixed in 11.2, as explained in c#20 and c#16. (And i was recently able to download libpurple and libpurple-lang without any problems from both 11.0 and 11.2 repositories, so the file is definitely not corrupted on all mirrors). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
