[Bug 1128543] New: yast2-vm package no longer recommended by base Yast pattern
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1128543 Bug ID: 1128543 Summary: yast2-vm package no longer recommended by base Yast pattern Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.0 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: piteccelaya@gmail.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Issue: the yast2-vm package is no longer recommended by base Yast pattern, but by KVM tools pattern. Effect: this makes the Yast Virtualization module no longer present by default, which can present an initial issue for users who prefer this way to install virtualization stuff. Perhaps not too big of an issue: one just needs to manually install yast2-vm package. However it does represent an additional previous step, even if small. Besides, the fact that this package is now only recommended by KVM tools pattern makes it totally redundant, since installing the KVM tools package pulls the entire KVM Server pattern anyways. (What if user wants just Xen or other technology instead of KVM?) Steps to reproduce: make a clean installation of openSUSE Leap 15.0; do "zypper up" just in case. In Yast, the Virtualization module is absent. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

This package is installed as recommended for openSUSE. So it should be installed by default on openSUSE (Leap / TW).

Sorry, this got me a bit confused... Does it mean bug was just now fixed and yast2-vm package is again installed by default in an openSUSE Leap installation from scratch? Or things are just the same? As I mentioned in the steps to reproduce, I made an openSUSE Leap installation from scratch using the DVD media some days ago, and yast2-vm package was not installed; hence Yast Virtualization module was absent by default. And, just for record, what was this bug 1083398 about that made Ginies remove the recommends? Thanks. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Half a year in github upstream, and no one has been able to fix it in actual Leap 15.0 package release?
Which is fully expected. Leap is not a rolling distro, so it doesn't automatically get all the changes in the packages or patterns done to the repositories or to the upstream projects. Traducing that to Github. Every pattern repository has a master branch where new activity takes place. Those changes are visible (almost) immediately in Tumbleweed and (in some cases) also in the next release of Leap. Of course, that change is not applied retrospectively to all the already released versions of Leap. If someone wants a certain change to be released as a maintenance update for already released versions. That person has to change the appropriate branch (not only the master one) and do some manual work. That's exactly the point of having a release-based distribution, as opposed to a rolling one like Tumbleweed.
...
Well, Leap 15.1 is on the way anyways. Do you think this issue could really be fixed at least by then?
Yes, as you can see here[1], Leap 15.1 includes a newer version of the YaST pattern that includes the changes mentioned on comment#5. [1] https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/openSUSE:Leap:15.1/patterns-yast So everything works as expected, the fix was submitted for the next version of Leap and for Tumbleweed. So it has been there in TW for a long time and will be there in the next Leap release. It was never submitted as a maintenance update for Leap 15.0 (it was not a critical bug or security problem, so it makes sense), so it was never released as an update for 15.0. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
