[Bug 765249] New: Brcmsmac has to be unloaded/loaded for wireless to work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=765249 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=765249#c0 Summary: Brcmsmac has to be unloaded/loaded for wireless to work Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: shawnr@wildblue.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:12.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/12.0 Broadcom BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4353] (rev 01) This card works with the brcmsmac driver that is included in the kernel. The b43 module was originally loaded. I blacklisted the b43 driver, but the brcmsmac driver was still not used. The only way to get the card to work is to run "modprobe -r brcmsmac" and "modprobe brcmsmac". This has happened in every version of 12.2 so far. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Boot OS 2.Wireless card doens't work 3.Unload/load brcmsmac and wirless card works Actual Results: Atfer unloading/loading brcmsmac wireless works until next boot. Expected Results: Broadcom BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4353] (rev 01) should use brcmsmac and work after boot. I will try to get dmesg output shortly. I have to blacklist intel_ips because dmesg is 100% filled with "intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: ME failed to update for more than 1s, likely hung" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After setting the connection as a "system connection" per this thread, the wireless card automatically connects at boot. http://forums.opensuse.org/forums/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-releas... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

NetworkManager has behaved this way since 12.1. I set all connections to be system connections, which minimizes the problem. Note that the Gnome network manager applet defaults to using system connections (the box "share this connection with other users" at the bottom of the gnome applet screen). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

None of the other KDE distros have this quirk. Could it be some kind of permission problem? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=765249 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=765249#c5 --- Comment #5 from Neil Rickert <nrickert@ameritech.net> 2012-06-05 15:49:55 UTC --- This behavior started with opensuse 12.1, using the networkmanager plasmoid version 0.9. It was not a problem with earlier versions. Yes, there are permission problems, but I believe those are unrelated. I am experimenting with ways around the permission problems. See http://nwrickert2.wordpress.com/2012/06/05/trying-to-make-networkmanager-san... The problem you describe still exists, even without permission problems. To test, I deleted all connection definitions, and rebooted. Then I created a connection for my home network but did not make it a system connection. It connected right away. But if I logged out, then logged in again, it would not connect unless I disabled wireless then re-enabled it again. It should be possible to disable the startup of the networkmanager plasmoid applet in KDE, and instead autostart "nm-applet". I did that for a while with 11.4 and briefly with 12.1 (I have not yet tried with 12.2). The Gnome applet is less confusing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I assumed it was driver related. 12.1 had some kernel problems, so didn't use. This is the first experience with 12.2 and this problem. I will have to study up on policykit. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
