[Bug 1162506] New: Failure to create RAID0 or LVM when installing on two disks
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1162506 Bug ID: 1162506 Summary: Failure to create RAID0 or LVM when installing on two disks Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE Factory Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: aschnell@suse.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com CC: Vojtech.Zeisek@opensuse.org Depends on: 1162479 Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hello, I have got desktop with AMD RYZEN 9 3900X, GIGABYTE B450 AORUS PRO motherboard and two SSD disks Intel 660p M.2 2TB SSD NVMe. My intention was to create RAID0 with encrypted Btrfs on them. On the notebook I have encrypted LVM containing Btrfs root and swap. In the installation (TW snapshot available today for download) I selected manual disk selection, on first disk created /boot/efi and rest with RAID. Second disk I totally covered by RAID. I then created RAID0 array, and on it encrypted LVM with Btrfs root and swap. Yast was happy with my request and let me proceed, but on the beginning of the installation it crashed (see the attachment with 20200203_094042.jpg). As second trial I tried to create /boot/efi on the first disk, and cover the rest by LVM, second disk totally cover by LVM, and the encrypted LVM contained Btrfs and swap. Again, Yast seemed happy and let me proceed, but it crashed on the beginning of installation (see the attachment with 20200203_095903.jpg). As third trial I used guided setup to create same result as the second disk - use both disks, use encrypted LVM, etc. This worked well, and I got same state as was my proposal before. When I start the system, I'm asked for the password to unlock disk three times, which is weird. As I'm unlocking single LVM, I'd expect to be asked only once. I'm not sure if the installation is correct or if I will have to remake it. Of course, I'll be happy to provide any details and experiment to fix this. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From comment #0, it looks you set up your machine on new/clean hardware: Two new (no data) SSD disks?
I am confused with your steps: trial 1: you only have 2 disks, create raid0 on disks 1 & 2, then create encrypted lvm on raid0? trial 2: on 2 disks, don't create raid0, create lvm partition, create encrypted on lvm? trial 3: use guided setup to create encrypted LVM and succeeded? on the trial 3, do you see the lvm error messages? Do you ever edit the /etc/lvm/lvm.conf or could you paste your machine /etc/lvm/lvm.conf to attachment? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have some questions to you.
I'm the original reporter so I answer instead of Arvin. :-)
From comment #0, it looks you set up your machine on new/clean hardware: Two new (no data) SSD disks?
Yes, new machine, two new identical empty NVMe disks.
I am confused with your steps: trial 1: you only have 2 disks, create raid0 on disks 1 & 2, then create encrypted lvm on raid0?
Yes. I use to have encrypted LVM containing whole Btrfs root and swap, so the only unencrypted part is /boot/efi. The machine doesn't have HW RAID. So I created something like: - disk 1 - /boot/efi - RAID - disk 2 - RAID And then I tried to create RAID0, which would be totally covered by encrypted LVM containing whole root and swap. As on one disk there was that /boot/efi, the partitions for RAID didn't have equal size, I thought this should be no problem for RAID0.
trial 2: on 2 disks, don't create raid0, create lvm partition, create encrypted on lvm?
Basically yes: - disk 1 - /boot/efi - LVM - disk 2 - LVM The big LVM was encrypted, containing whole root and swap.
trial 3: use guided setup to create encrypted LVM and succeeded?
Yes.
on the trial 3, do you see the lvm error messages?
No, it went smooth.
Do you ever edit the /etc/lvm/lvm.conf
No, never ever. :-)
or could you paste your machine /etc/lvm/lvm.conf to attachment?
I'm sorry in the meantime I added there 3rd smaller disk serving as root, and the two disks are used as Btrfs RAID0 /home. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
