I am all for having a means to get verbose execution traces to be able to pinpoint issues, but if there are no errors .xsession-errors should be empty. All I am asking is to not log this by default. Apparently there are escape sequences in there. Also following your proposal would mean that you no longer find informational and error messages in the same file, which would make searching bugs in many cases even harder. A better approach would be to distinguish between informational and error lines in the logfile with an appropriate prefix as it's done in the X logfile. As a final note, look at /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession line 107ff # # Redirect errors to the standard user log files. # for errfile in "$HOME/.xsession-errors" \ "$TMPDIR/xses-$USER" \ "/tmp/xses-$USER" do It agrees that the log file is for errors. So maybe it is up to you to bother openFATE or whatever to discuss how and where to log debug-level information. Don't get me wrong, such diagnostic info is needed and very useful if things go wrong.
