[Bug 540665] New: acroread startup *slow*
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=540665 User koenig@linux.de added comment http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=540665#c275088 Summary: acroread startup *slow* Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: koenig@linux.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- acroread startup is _very_ slow, may take 30-60+ seconds with cold disk cache because it reads all fonts at startup (fontconfig cache does not seem to work). strace shows 12830 successful open() calls with path /usr/share/fonts/... : grep 'open("/usr/share/fonts/' /tmp/acroread.strace.out | grep -v ENO | wc 12830 64162 933768 rpm -qf /usr/bin/acroread acroread-8.1.6-0.1.1 startup is fast (no font scans) if I change ACRO_ENABLE_FONT_CONFIG=1 to ACRO_ENABLE_FONT_CONFIG=0 in /usr/bin/acroread. the comment in this script says # use fontconfig, see http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=275088 but "see" does not work for me, pitty: Access Denied You are not authorized to access bug #275088. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

->noresponse.
since acroread-9.4.1 just got released I'm showing up again: at least the acroread-9.4.0 packages for both 11.1 and 11.3 still show the same bad startup timing. looking into /usr/bin/acroread that's not a big surprise: $ grep FONT_CONFIG /usr/bin/acroread ACRO_ENABLE_FONT_CONFIG=1 export ACRO_ENABLE_FONT_CONFIG # ACRO_DISABLE_FONT_CONFIG=1 # export ACRO_DISABLE_FONT_CONFIG because FONT_CONFIG "seems" to be enabled (and using fontconfig causes that tremendous startup delay). changing ACRO_ENABLE_FONT_CONFIG to zero doesn't make any difference because it's not used in the binary at all, only the original variable ACRO_DISABLE_FONT_CONFIG matters: $ strings /usr/lib/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread | grep FONT_CONFIG ACRO_DISABLE_FONT_CONFIG with both native adobe acroread-9.4 and 9.4.1 export ACRO_DISABLE_FONT_CONFIG=1 still does the job: startup is fast as expected/wanted. and since PDF files shall not rely on external fonts it makes absolutely no senst to scan all fontconfig directories for plenty of fonts -- all fonts shall be contained within the PDF file itself... maybe there is a chance to fix this misfeature for acroread 9.4.1++ ?! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
